Tranent Cemetery
« on: Sunday 28 September 08 20:17 BST (UK) »
The town cemetery in Tranent opened in 1905, does anyone know where people were buried before then.  I know there is the old Parish Church, but was there anywhere else. ?
Was there a Paupers field ?

Hi
There is a graveyard around the Parish Church in Tranent, as well as the new one. If you tell me who you are looking for I could look in the M.I. book for Tranent Churchyard.

i am looking for a great great gran and grandad who died in Tranent in 1898 and 1919.  they were catholics so i am not sure which graveyard they would have been buried in - the one in Tranent or the catholic one in Edinburgh.  is there any way to find out short of trailing along to Tranent and checking out the graveyards there stone by stone??  very grateful for any advice - Elizabeth

Hi
I would think being Catholic would not stop them being buried in Tranent. According to my Memorial Inscription book(for the Parish Church Yard), the large district cemetry was opened in 1920.
There is also the possibility that there are no gravestones. I have ancestors dying in Tranent, but no stones to mark the graves.
You could perhaps enquire with the local registrar, but I think this costs money now.

Hi
I have the East Lothian Monumental Inscriptions, Westermost parishes (Tranent, Seton, Prestonpans, Prestonpans West & Ormiston Old Churchyard) The Inscriptions for Tranent Parish Churchyard were listed in June 2005.
There are no Dodds or Skeldons listed but quiet a few Johnstones. If you could give me a few more details I'll look.
East Lothian Monumental Inscriptions, Hillfoot Vilages (Garvald, Innerwick, Moreham, Oldhamstocks, Spott, Stenton, Whittinghame & yester) does have some Skeldons & Dod(d)s. Again if you have more specific names I will Look.

Hi Fiona
Thanks for your offer.  I found some entries at http://www.ejclark.force9.co.uk/index.htm
which covers some Stenton Prestonkirk and Whittinghame Burials:
SKELDON:   I have found some of mine at Prestonkirk Cem
Prestonkirk Burial Ground. East Linton, SCT
Stone No. G276, Face: East
SACRED
TO THE MEMORY OF
=============================
ADAM SKELDON
WHO DIED OCTOBER 16TH 1846
AGED 72 YEARS

ALSO HIS SPOUSE MARGARET DODDS
WHO DIED JANRY. 12TH 1841
AGED 59 YEARS

ALSO THEIR SON JOHN SKELDON
WHO DIED MARCH 21ST 1843
AGED 31 YEARS

ALSO THEIR SON ADAM SKELDON
WHO DIED DECEMBER 6TH 1842
AGED 21 YEARS

ALEXANDER SKELDON
DIED FEBRUARY 2ND 1888 AGED 72 YEARS
HIS WIFE ISABELLA ANDERSON
DIED 14TH JANUARY 1891 AGED 80 YEARS

DODDS is family of Margaret DODDS(aboved1841) who may have been b 1782 in Langton, Berwick. She is buried with husband but parents I believe to be Peter Dodds and Elizabeth Penny - not sure if they moved from Langton.

JOHNSTON is my important one however and several missing links which burial records could confirm.   Family Born in both Tranent and Prestonpans. I have checked PrestonKirk and none so far link. Hoping to find elsewhere.
William JOHNSTON m Janet FORMAN born c 1730s.
Children James b1761, George b 1763, Jean 1765, Mary 1768, William 1774, Charlotte Hope, 1777.
Possible of course they moved out of area as did my Charles b 1777.

Also f you find any SCRIMGEOUR I would be interested.
Thanks
Tricia

Hi Tricia
Cannot see any of your Johnstones, but some of the really early stones may have been illegible.
Looked for your Dods in the books, also in Eastern Berwickshire which unfortunatly dosn't cover Langton but could find nothing.
Also nothing on Scrimegeor anywhere.
Sorry
