Accrington St. Ann's baptism please
« on: Tuesday 07 October 08 12:23 BST (UK) »
Hi,

If anybody has access to baptism records for St. Anns (RC) in Accrington, please can they look up the baptism on 3/11/1898 of Roland Kenyon?

I viewed this years ago at the county records office and there was a note written in the margin about Roland's subsequent marriage. It looked like he married Elizabeth Joanna Burowden (?) on 18/2/1930 at St. something in Sheffield - where the something could have been Weld/Vincent or, with hindsight, possibly Wilfred.

A helpful person in the West Yorkshire forum has spotted that there is an entry on FreeBMD in Q4 1918 in Sheffield for the marriage of Roland Kenyon and Elizabeth Smith or Snowden. This seems very promising, so if anyone can see the scribble in the margin, please can they tell me whether this is right??

Thanks very much
Alison

I have checked the full GRO index for the March qtr 1930 and there is no marriage listed for a Roland Kenyon

Thanks Carole.

It's looking like it was fairly bogus information or else I completely misread the date, which is why I was hoping that someone had access to the baptism and could see what the date might be...

Thanks anyway.

Hello, My name is Roland Kenyon, my Grandfather from Accrington was named the same, my understanding is that he was born around 1900. My grandfather Married Elizabeth Smith at St Vincents Sheffield around 1918.  I think you are talking of the same person. He was Elizabeth's second Husband her first husband was a vicar who's surname was Smith, her first husband died leaving 2 Children Jim and Janet Smith. after they married they had a further 3 sons, Roland Kenyon, Edward Kenyon and Kenneth Kenyon (my father) and 1 Daughter all attended school at St Vincents.

Elizabeth was born around 1882, and I think her maiden name was Parish.

Hope this helps.

Hello Roland,

Thanks for your message. This certainly sounds like a connection if your grandfather was from Accrington. My husband's grandfather was Joseph Kenyon who was one of Roland's elder brothers (born 1893). (Roland was born 22 October 1898 and baptised on 3 November 1898.)

The only thing that puzzles me is that the marriage entry in Q4 1918 definitely gives Elizabeth's name as Smith (which obviously fits) or Snowden rather than Parish. Could she have been married to someone before Rev Smith? I can't find that marriage.

The birth date of Elizabeth sounds right as my mum-in-law remembers her being "a lot older than Roland". Do you know where she was born?

I don't know if you know Roland's parents, but they were Edwin Kenyon and Ruth Bimpson Shuttleworth. We have quite a lot of information on this family tree. (It's on Genes Reunited.) Let me know if you want any information!

Cheers
Alison

Hello Alison,

Well the birth date for Roland 22nd October is correct, It appears My grandmother married using her first husbands family name of Smith.
My uncle told me her Maiden name was Parish, he also said that my Grandfather had a sister in Canada. Unfortunately all of the children are now deceased including my father who was the youngest. I do have a picture of my grandfather with his brothers and Sisters taken in Accrington before he came to Sheffield. he is wearing Military clothes and looks the youngest of 4 men and two Women.

I understood my Grandmother was from Lincolnshire, she used to tell of cart rides from her farm to Skegness. Thank you for the information on my Granfathers Parents. I and my Brothers would be interested to know more.

Kind Regards
Roland
