Missing: Malcolm Livingstone b.1843
« on: Friday 10 October 08 08:34 BST (UK) »
Hello from a shiny new newbie!

As suggested by dave on the Census lookups board I am also posting my problem here. (Original post here -> http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=333208.new#new)

My problem is a mystery Malcolm:
I'm looking for a trace of Malcolm Livingstone's birth record. He was born in Stirlingshire, St Ninians in 1843.
I have a trace of him in the 1871 census where he was in Perthshire with his wife (Margaret McNicol sometimes spellt MacNicol depending on the docs) and his eldest son Peter, aged 1.
He appears again in the 1901 census, a widower with his children.

He married Margaret in 1869 in Comrie, Perthshire.

I cannot trace his birth at all, therefore have no way of further researching his parents. I know their names from the death cert (died 13/4/1916 in Carrington, Midlothian)

Parents' names: John Livingstone (b. Glenorchy?) and Janet Risk (b. Stirling?) It is unclear exactly when their marriage took place. (Banns 17/11/1838 Parish of Fintry, Stirling) It mentions that John was "of Glenorchy".

Children:
Peter - b. 1870 in Comrie, Perthshire
John b. 1872 in Comrie, Perthshire
Janet b. 1875 in Dumbarton, Dumbartonshire
Dugald b. 1880 in Carrington, Edinburgh
Margaret b. 1883 in Carrington, Edinburgh

I'm at a dead end :(

I wonder if anyone can help me find my Malcolm.

This may be the marriage entry for parents, or another reading of the banns: 07 DEC 1838 Denny, Stirling

Family's 1861 entry:

John Livingston 49, shepherd, b. Appin, Argyleshire
Janet Livingston 49, b. St Neinans, Stirlingshire
Catherine Livingston 18, b. St Neinans, Stirlingshire
Malcolm Livingston 17 , b. St Neinans, Stirlingshire
John Livingston 14, b. Gargunnock, Stirlingshire
Dugald Livingston 12, b. Burnfet, Stirlingshire
Janet Livingston 10, b. Burnfet, Stirlingshire

There are no births/christenings showing for any of the children unfortunately. Their births were either not registered or registers have been lost/destroyed over the years.

WOW!!  Thank you!!

How on earth did you find him?   I have searched and searched and came up with nothing!!

re Janet and John, I had found that marriage record, I think it is the date of the actual marriage, following the banns in november.

A million thanks again, now I can carry on my research and stop banging my head off the wall.  :D

Given Malcolm's parents lived past the start of official registration in 1855, you should find their death certs. on SP which would let you trace back their individual families hopefully. Always easier with wives because you can search by married name and maiden name. There is a likely death for Janet Risk/Livingstone age 78 in Aberfoyle Perth in 1888.

This looks to be her entry in 1881, already widowed by the look of it:

Janet Livingstone 72, formerly Domest Serv., b. St Ninians
Catherine Livingstone 35, daugh., b. St Ninians
Dugald Livingstone 33, son, shepherd, b. Gargunnock, Stirling

Address: West Duilater, Port of Montieth, Perth

Janet shows as already widowed by 1871 (showing as head of the household - original image would confirm), so likely death range for John Snr. between 1861-71:

Janet Livingston 60, grocer, b. St Ninians
Margaret Livingston 29, b. St Ninians
John Livingston 26, shepherd, b. St Ninians

Address: Banautone 1 Ho, Aberfoyle Perthshire

One possible birth showing for Janet Risk in St Ninians on 26 OCT 1808, parents John Risk and Margaret Lapslie. Hopefully her death cert info will confirm parents.

Similarly, for John one possible birth: 19 MAR 1810 Glenorchy And Inishail, Argyll, to parents Malcolm Livingston and Catharine Black. To be confirmed with his death cert. hopefully  ::)
