Hello….. :)

I have never seen any photographs of the King & Miller,Stockwell Gate, even the book “Nag’s Head, Kings Arms” by Barbara Gallon with David J Bradbury about Mansfield’s Hostelry History doesn’t have a photograph – the information it gives is; that in 1793 it is listed in directories; in 1903 Pigeon fancier’s held their first show there and it was closed down in about 1959.
Stockwell gate joins onto Sutton Road and from what I can gather stood on the same side as the pub called “William 1V” (sometimes known locally as Top House) 208, Sockwell Gate = http://www.ukpubfinder.com/pub/16338  - the King & Miller stood approximately on land after the “William 1V”; going towards the town, but before you get to the junction of Bancroft Lane.

thanks a lot Sheila
.............................a friend of mine still holds the deeds to the King and Miller as it was owned by his family before it was demolished.
It is now the site of a superstore on the corner of Bancroft Lane and Sutton Road.

Hello JVee.... :)

Welcome to Rootschat and many thanks for sharing the photographs it is appreciated that you have taken the trouble to post them.....

Great pictures by the way;so the original King and Miller was not far from the end of the Stockwell Gate and Bancroft Lane junction as I can see the Red Lion pub in the distance.

Kind Regards

Sheila.

Just out of picture to the left is Padley Hill. The first house, number 2 was the home of Mr. Bower - roof tiler and slater. Mr. Bower bought the whole site and it became a builders merchants and kitchen showroom.

The King & Miller and the adjoining houses were demolished in 1958.

I am interested in this area as a William Harrington and wife Mary Anne Pennistant occupied the William IV around the 1833's and 40's, William Harrington died at Stockwell Gate in 1846, any old pictures of the Pub or how I could get some more information would be appreciated.
I'm not sure where William Harrington was born although his birth was around 1805, again any pointers

Thanks
John
