Possible Emigration -where would I look
« on: Monday 31 January 05 20:21 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching for a John Thomas McNutt who was born in 1862 in Darwen Lancashire England.  The last information that I have is from the 1891 census of Darwen when John was 28, single and living with parents and family.

There seems to be no record of either a marriage or death so I am wondering if he could have emigrated (a younger brother went to Canada in the early 1900,s) it could have been any country, but where do I start to search? Can any one give me any idea's?

You could try

For people who went to Canada try       http://www.pier21.ca/

and for those who went to America try       www.ellisisland.org.

hope this helps.

I found quite a few of my Scottish lot on Ellis Island both going and coming home for short stays before returning with other family members.

No problem, I hope they will be of help

I've not been in for a while either - been doing pages for my website and e-book - I am getting closer, but its those finishing touches and the last minute piccies I always want to add to make it more interesting for the reader.  Words and information are ok, but I find it always brings the info closer if you can see a place or a face, dosn't it ?

regards and good hunting

Hi genjunction,

I have had a look and not found John Thomas - did find another McNutt but not  sure about him and I am looking from 1891 onwards, thanks anyway.  One Brother did emigrate to Canada and hiS great Grandaughter Galena and I are doing research on the family.

Thanks again Matty :)

Hi Matty,

Just in case you haven't found this yet in your Canadian research, the index to the 1901 Canadian Census can be found at http://automatedgenealogy.com - with links to the original images at the National Archives site.

And if your family went to Ontario you might want to check out http://www.rootsweb.com/~onvsr/ for Ontario BMDs up to about 1910.  This site is by volunteer transcription, so it is not complete, but the marriage page in particular is very large.  There are several McNutts to be found, but most before 1900.

Good luck...

Martha

Hi MJP,

I will check out those sites as the McNutt's I am searching for went out after 1891 and one family in early 1900's but I have information on them from Galena.  Thank you
