*** One-Name Studies - Read this First ***
« on: Monday 31 January 05 23:09 GMT (UK) »
The one name interests boards are intended for posts about any particular surnames you may be interested in, nation. or world-wide.  Please provide as much detail on the surname you are interested in such as areas covered and dates and as many christian names as possible.

If you are only interested in the occurrences of the name in a particular county, please place your topic on the relevant county board.

You may also be interested in registering your search with the
Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS)

Information:
When a researcher registers a particular surname with the Guild of One-Name Studies, they agree to:

a) Collect all references to the registered sumame(s) on a world-wide basis.
b) Agree to deal with all reply-paid enquiries and emails pertaining to that registered surname.

But first of all they must collect:

a)   All entries from indexes to births, marriages and deaths at either the Family Records Centre, London, New Register House, Edinburgh, the CRO Belfast or ORG Dublin, and/or equivalent record offices elsewhere.
b)   All entries from published will indexes, together with the information given in those wills and letters of administration.
c)   All entries from the International Genealogical index and a substantial body of entries from relevant parish registers
d)   All entries from the appropriate county histories and the publications of the local historical and antiquarian societies and from census indexes
Plus A survey of telephone directories to give a rough idea of present day population distribution.

All the above is a minimum requirement to join the Guild.

A one-namer collects all occurrences of a surname, as opposed to a particular pedigree (ancestors of one person) or descendancy (descendants of one person or couple).

Before you do all that back breaking research – see if someone has already done it for you by visiting

www.one-name.org

and checking their 7000 plus name Index to see if a member has registered the surname you are interested in, and it is the subject of a one name study on a world-wide basis.

The information on this page is incorrect. There is no such thing as a minimum requirement to collect all the above data before joining the Guild of One-name Studies.

The Guild's into page http://www.one-name.org/intro.html gives guidelines about the sort of research which it is advisable to do before registering a surname.

There are three different categories of membership, A, B and C.

http://www.one-name.org/join.html

Members in category C are only working towards collecting all the GRO references for their surname.

I have contacted a person on GOONs, about my interest,
but they said they were only collecting data on the southern counties of England.

So obviously there are different options to members. :-[

The information on here about the registration requirements for the Guild of One-Name Studies is now even more out of date than ever. Could this sticky post be corrected to include the current details rather than out-of-date info from decades ago? The registration "principles" can be found here:

http://www.one-name.org/guildregcom.html

They say:

"The formal obligation agreed by members when registering a surname with the Guild is simple - it is to respond to email and postal reply-paid queries relating to the study in a timely fashion.

Outside this formal requirement, members who register a surname with the Guild as a one-name study accept the following broad principles in relation to it:

- that the study will be global in scope

- that it will include research within countries where the name is relatively significant and where
sources of genealogical data are readily available

- that it will research and store data available in core genealogical datasets and transcriptions

- that it stores and may research other data where the surname is mentioned

- that the member will maintain an accurate description of the scope and progress of the study using the study codes shown on the member's self-service registration page on the Guild website.[/li]

It should be noted that the Guild places no obligation on those registering a name to follow any specific regime of research, nor to concentrate on any specific aspect of their study. In particular, there are no time constraints or deadlines on members, who are free to conduct their one-name projects as they see best."
