I have an ancestor called John Boynton Robinson b. 1822 in Kirk Ella. I believe his parents were John and Mary (I assume that Boynton was her maiden name) but I can find no marriages in the IGI for this area. Could anyone help please as I am so stuck..!

Hi Toz,

I found the baptism when I went to the RO this morning - details are as Carole posted, with the additional info that their abode was Anlaby and John was a labourer.

However, I couldn't find a marriage for John and Mary in Kirkella. There are no marriages in Anlaby this early - it wasn't a parish as such.

I'd suggest a search of the neighbouring parishes, including the Hull parishes - good luck!

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

Thanks so much Jill for looking into that for me. Interesting to know about Anlaby not being a parish as such at this time.

The list of parish registers on deposit at East Riding Archives has

Anlaby St Peter marriages from 1872  &
Anlaby Common St Mark marriages from 1948.

I think Mary Boynton may be the key to your puzzle - assuming you're right and this was Mary's maiden name. Of course, I agree with Carole: Boynton may not be her maiden name but I think it's a good bet.

So - first, find your Mary Boynton's likely baptism and hopefully she'll have married in her home parish. If only it were that easy!!  :-\

Parishes neighbouring Kirkella are: Cottingham, Hessle, North Ferriby, Welton, Skidby, Melton, Rowley - and of course Hull.

Does the family not appear on any of the censuses so that you can discover their birthplaces? Chances are that John and Mary would only be about 50-55 in 1851 so there's a good chance - except of course for the very common name of Robinson!

JOHN BOYNTON ROBINSON was my  great great grandfather. His son Henry wrote a book about the family history which can be viewed here https://www.withernwickvillage.co.uk/Henry-Robinson.htm. It contains all the knowledge I have gleaned about the family. He married Fanny Lawson Thompson in 1845. I have traced her ancestry back to 1641. message me if you wish to know more

I believe they were catholics so their names may not appear on standard Parish Registers. John Robinson of Anlaby married Mary Boynton in 1821 in Kirkella. He was a gardener and labourer. his father was a cow keeper and a freeman of Beverley although I don't know his first name.
