John Currie b1799 Dryfesdale
« on: Friday 17 October 08 14:33 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful if anyone out there could help me;I have been given some info. by a member of the family-everything has been proven except for John Currie.
I was told that John was born Dryfesdale and married Janet Little in 1822 at Moffat;his parents could have been William Currieand Elizabeth Baird.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Hello,

The IGI - www.familysearch.org  has 3 'submitted' births for  William Currie and Elizabeth Baird.

William Currie
Birth: 21 JUN 1806 Littlewhart,Haddom, , Dumfries, Scotland

James Currie - International Genealogical Index
Birth: 25 FEB 1804 Littlewhart,Haddom, , Dumfries, Scotland

John Currie - International Genealogical Index
Birth: 21 MAY 1800 Littlewhart,Haddom, , Dumfries, Scotland

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (also referred to as SP) - the official pay per view site only has 2 births in Dumfries for a William Currie and an Elizabeth or Elizabeth Baird.  £6 buys 30 credits.  6 credits allows for the download of a birth entry or census image..

Did John Currie live beyond 1855?  if so his death entry should hopefully give both parents names if known - including mothers maiden name.

Off now to check www.freecen.org.uk to see if I can find your John inthe 1841 census.

Regards,  Steve :O)

If I can add one or two thoughts, please.

In your first post you mention that somebody has suggested John Currie was born Dryfesdale and that his parents may be William Currie and Elizabeth Baird.  I just wondered what had led you to John in the first place.   What caught my eye was the name Elizabeth Baird - 'cos I have a marriage to Adam Caird for an Elizabeth Baird at Dumfries in November 1786.

Consequently I did a little Census checking continuing forward using Ancestry from where Piglet started.  I have not looked at any of the images on SP.  However for the 1851 I used the transcription on the following site www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes/census.aspx

I won't go into the detail of each one but suffice it to say that John's place of birth varies over the Censuses.  John appears to have died in 1888.   But this is from the Wiils and Testament index on ScotlandsPeople.  I cannot find a Death Registration though :D

If you do move forward and follow up on their children.  Their marriage certificates will give the names of John and his wife including her maiden name.

If you have any further questions do come back.

Just some thoughts
Regards
Reiver
