51st foot 2nd Yorkshire west riding light infantry Regiment
« on: Sunday 19 October 08 12:44 BST (UK) »
Hi  :)

i'm looking for William Wagstaff(1806) and family.  Any census records, regiment records BDM etc.

Known information is, he and family went to Tasmania (1838) and Western Australia (1840) where he remarried and had more children.  It is unknown what happened to his 1st wife.

First marraige to Mary Ann ?, Children Mary Ann (1833) and Sarah Jane, may have been born on ship (1839)

2nd marraige to Mary Murphy in Western Australia.

Thanks
Kim :)

Hello

I am trying to learn more about a man I believe to be an ancestor. His name is Richard Shortland and he was born approximately 1823 in Northamptonshire (Weedon).  I believe I have located Richard on the British Army, Worldwide Index 1841 (https://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/results?datasetname=british+army%2c+worldwide+index+1841&firstname=richard&firstname_variants=true&lastname=shortland), including his service number (1456), rank and regiment (51st foot).

I understand Richard traveled to Australia with the 51st regiment in 1841 (I believe the regiment was later re-named the King's Own Yorks Light Infantry) and he remained there, dying in Sydney in 1887.

I would love to learn more about him and further background information about my search can be found at
https://tonilouiseabram.wordpress.com/2018/04/01/richard-shortland-and-eliza-shortland-nee-butts/.

In addition, I have been given a photo that appears at
https://tonilouiseabram.wordpress.com/2018/04/04/unknown-soldiers/
and I would be very interested to know if anyone thinks this could be the 51st regiment.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for contacting me.

I have done some extensive research on the 51st regiment.  William Wagstaff was my 4th great grandfather and traveled from England to New South Wales via Tasmania in 1837/8.  Part of the regiment stayed in Tasmania and the other part traveled onto Sydney.  William was one who stayed in Tasmania, later travelling to Western Australia in 1840.
My suggestion to you, is read everything that comes up on the TROVE newspaper search for the ships PORTSEA and Runnymede, you may find more information that way.  If he didnt stay in Tasmania, he would have settled in New South Wales, later travelling to WA to pick up 51st regiment soldiers and then on to India,  William left the regiment before they headed to India.
I hope this helps
