Obituaries are detailed accounts of a person's life. These may appear in house magazines of associations, businesses, groups, organisations, parish magazines, school magazines and sports or social clubs. Occasionally they may appear in programmes of sports events. They also appear in local or national newspapers

Death notices (also known as funeral notices) are paid advertisements written by family members and friends as well as associations and organisations with which the deceased
or a close relative was connected.

Have others come across this?  For some reason I have found memorial notices in the years after the death but sometimes there was never an original obituary.  It is still interesting to find but I usually doesn't have as much detail.  Usually a poem or short story.

If you have medical folk, try checking The Lancet or The Medical Journal. Reasonably easy to find, the Wellcome Library has a search facility though you will still have to visit to view the obituary. The British Library also have obituaries listed.
Also try doing a Google book search of the person's name, its possible to uncover obituaries in the most unlikely places.
