*COMPLETED* GOLDSMITH - 1871 census
« on: Tuesday 21 October 08 13:57 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Would someone help me find George Goldsmith, b. about 1816 in Manchester.  He married Harriet in 1841 at Stoke-on-Trent and was railway station master at Rushton Spencer for most of his life.  I'm wondering about his sibs, parents, etc. in Manchester.
Thanks.

Hello cassiar
If John has the right family then in the 1841 Pigots trade directory it has Robert at 19 Bond Street , Cooper Street and h. 58 Faulkner Street (presumably that will mean home address ) . He is listed under land agents etc .

Not sure if this is connected but the 1879 Slaters directory has a George Hartley GOLDSMITH at 63 Faulkner Street and an architect . I also see that he was married in Manchester in the same quarter as your man , so maybe John's find might be another GOLDSMITH family and coincidence , but certainly worth bearing in mind .
Good luck
Eric

Hi,

A copy of George's marriage certificate (1841 to Harriet) should give the name of his father, which might help to confirm, or not, if he is the same George found on 1841 census by  jvy20.

Thank you for all these replies.
I have a further request.  If anyone has access to the 1861 census and 1871 census, would you please look for Samuel Goldsmith, b. 1841 in Longton, Staffordshire.  He is in the 1851 census as a 9-year-old with his parents, but then I don't know what happened to him.  I'm wondering if he went to Manchester where his father came from and presumably there would be relatives.
Thanks.

Thanks John!  That's definitely the right guy.  Now, would you please send me the names of who he was boarding with?

Also, is he in the 1871 census?

Many thanks for your help.

I've now found out that the father of George Goldsmith (c. 1816 Manchester) was a coal merchant named Samuel Goldsmith.  Any chance he and his family are in the Manchester area censuses, etc?
Thanks
