River Wear Pilots
« on: Wednesday 22 October 08 12:30 BST (UK) »
Hello there

Does anyone know what records still exist for River Wear Pilots?

I have several in my family starting from about 1815 through until 1860 and I would love to know more about them, particularly the earlier ones.

I have tried emailing T&W Archives about this but they have never replied.

Many thanks

Ashley

Tyne and Wear Archives have a List of pilots, Sunderland Date January 1809, and Master Pilots of Sunderland c1870. They have a number of other records relating to pilots in the NE.

An article titled "The Master Pilots of Sunderland" was published in the N&DFHS Journal (Winter 1997) Vol. 22, No 4. The article gave details of 68 Master Pilots recorded in the Sunderland Pilotage Commission Register dated circa 1871.

Tyne  & Wear Archive have a research service at £25 an hour

Sunderland Antiquarian Society may have some records on River Wear Pilots.  Their Society are hopeful that their website will go live shortly so it may be then worth while contacting them via the website.

Wearsider.
I have made enquiries at Sunderland Antiquarian Society and they do not have information on Sunderland Pilots as such. They do not have a list of Sunderland Pilots.

I will PM Ashley with the name and address of the Donations Secretary, so he can write to him and find out what they have.

Wearsider.

According to their newsletter of Winter 2005 they had received a donation from a Ron Lawson about Pilots of the 19th Century.
The message I referred to  http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/eng-dur-sunderland/2007-01/1168697637 was posted in 2007.
Unless they have received a later donation.

The message of 2007 that you referred to was posted by me and was based on information that I received following an enquiry to the Society at that time.

In my previous posting I referred to having read something recently regarding a donation.  You have now remindede me Stan that this was about four weeks ago when I was shown copies of newsletters that I had not previously seen, including those for 2005.

My incorrect posting of 2007 was given in good faith on the basis of information received at that time.
