Hi Jan,

never mind- it was a long shot with that surname anyway. Presumably this suggests a family firm? Would there be any Smiths from that vicinity earlier than those dates? There might also be a connection with the surname Walker somewhere along the line as this crops up as a middle name in the 19th century although I've found no connection with that surname anywhere yet.

 Thanks for trying,

   Andy

I can't see any - though the abodes are somewhat vague, sometimes as vague as London! Have you tried searching the Freedom of the City Admission Papers on Ancestry? Might be something there. Or this site

http://www.londonlives.org/  is worth a look if you haven't already

I wish you luck with your Smiths - bit of a nghtmare I should imagine.

Hi Jan

thanks again for trying- yes I've looked at both but again everything I've found up to now is inconclusive. Probably won't get any further on this line. Even found a letter for sale on eBay from a John Smith in London with tender for lamps from the right period but that one was south of the river!

  Best regards

  Andy

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat :D

No sign of John Miles I'm afraid. If you haven't already it would be worth checking the Freedom of the City Admission Papers on Ancestry and http://www.londonlives.org/

There were 2 earlier Miles which may connect

Miles Richard s Richard, citizen adn lorimer to Andrew Niblett 7 Oct 1728
Miles Thomas s Thomas, Clyffe Pypard, Wilt, yeoman to Thomas Dring 7 Nov1701

Hi

I have a copy of London Apprentices : Armourers and Brasiers' Company 1610 -1800 from which I am happy to do look-ups. Although the apprenticeships were in London, the apprentices came from all over the country. The index gives the apprentices name plus his father's name ocupation and abode and the name of the master and date of apprenticeship. It does not unfortunately give the residence of the master or whether he was an armorer or brasier - but there is a separate index of Masters, so if you already know you have, say, a London Brasier you can find out if anyone was apprenticed to him.

Jan ;)

Do you have any Nisbet(t)/Nesbit(t) s mentioned? Really appreciate this thanks Jean

No Nisbet/Nesbits as apprentices or masters I'm afraid Jean. Sorry.

Despite 65 pages of entries in the booklet I don't think I've found anyone for anyone yet ( that includes my own Childs and Lyon  :( )
