Just to say thank you to you all seems not enough. Over the last few minutes I've learnt more about my family since I've been alive. I will be going to the see the Catherins Register at the Central Library in Liverpool and go from there.

Trying to decipher the place in Russia looks like Great (except there appears to be a loop below the t)  then vraw or braw - anyone else got any ideas?

In 1881 it says Greiswald - possibly it's Greifswald, which is in modern Germany near the Polish border (?)
