« on: Saturday 25 October 08 13:56 BST (UK) »
Hello

I dont know if I am in the right section here but I need help If possible with someone in a tree  I am working on..

Here is what I know so far..

John Thomas Lapham was born C 1846 His parents are John Thomas Lapham and Elizabeth?

1851 Census shows him Living with His parents at South Street Isleworth Aged 5 And his 2 Month Old Brother William George Lapham..

1861 Census he is Living at Upper Square Isleworth an Apprentice Boot Maker with George Travett? His father had died between the two census nights and His Mother Elizabeth was living at South Street Isleworth with his brother William and her new husband Jonathan Mingay..

1871 Census has John Thomas Lapham as a Lance Corporal in the Royal Engineers Aged 25..

In 1872 In Gillingham Kent He Married Sarah jane Mann.. and had daughters Matilda Lapham and Florene Annie Lapham they were born In India..

Florence Annie Lapham
Christening:  24 JUL 1879   India Office Ecclesiastical Returns-Bengal Presidency India
Father:  John Thomas Lapham
Mother:  Sarah Jane

Matilda Lapham
Birth:  10 FEB 1878
Christening:  22 FEB 1878   Roorkee, , West Bengal, India
Father:  John Thomas Lapham
Mother:  Sarah Jane

No Sign in 1881 Census so presuming they are still In India however By the 1891 Census Sarah jane Lapham Formerly Mann is widowed and in 1901 living as Sarah jane Lynch.. However there is nor marriage until much later for them..

Hoping someone can help with regards to John Thomas Lapham's careers with the royal engineers and how I can get information.. First time I have had army personel in the tree

Thanks
Angie ;D

I may have him in the latter part of his army career from medal rolls.

In the 2nd Afghan War 1878-80, I have 9021 Sgt* J.T.Lapham, RE (*some doubt as to the rank, as the Royal Engineers Medal Book gives him as a Lance-Corporal).

Then in Sudan in the 1880s, the same man appears: 9021 Sgt J.T.Lapham, RE
He was entitled to the Egypt Medal for Suakin 1885 and the Khedive's Star. He was in the RE mounted detachment serving with the 2nd Bn Mounted Infantry. He also served in the 11th Field Company at some point.
He later served with A-Company, Chatham and died on 12/06/1886 (presumably in the Chatham area?)

The date of death fits with the man you're looking for, so I think you need to be looking for a death certificate for that date in Kent.  ;)

Hi Neil

well this is the other side of the family maybe all met when in barracks.. As I stated sarah jane Mann married john Thomas Lapham as in the above post well in 1851 Same Barracks at Brompton sarah is living aged 1 with her father Samuel Mann who is stated to be If I can read it correct Sergeant R L Sappers Miners??..

I also have a query on Hector Dallas who is samuel's father in law he was with his daughter in 1861 who was widowed (ann Mann) and is a chelsea pensioner.. in 1851 he is at teh same barracks and listed as..Labourer in barrack department  (unreadable word Chelsea Pensioner) ..

1841 Hector with his children Gillingham Kent Sally Port but still looks like barracks? as there is an engineers office next to where he is on census page but im just guessing...

I really appreciate your help I would never have known where to start..

thanks

Hello Angie,

I can't see John's death on FreeBMD, so it may be worth checking the GRO Army Death Indices.
He may have gone overseas again  ???

The Royal Sappers and Miners were one of the predecessors of the RE.
The Royal Engineers were originally an officers corps only, with the Sappers and Miners being the other ranks.
They were formally absorbed into the RE in 1856.

There was a Hector Dallas who served in the Royal Artillery from 1813-1826, discharged age 35. Does that age fit with the man in the later census or not?
