I have a John Moffett born  c1797 London who was described as a Barrack Master.  Please can anyone explain what that was?

Hi Stan,
Thanks for that.  I'm slightly confused though as I understood that John Moffett was born close to 1797 (baptised May 1797) so wouldn't have been old enough to have been a Barrack Master if it stopped by 1806.  Any other thoughts on how I can find out more about him please?

Or anyone else?
Many thanks
DJ

I read that as the BM General post being abolished - the barrack masters themselves carried on ... I think.

Thanks MKG,
Any ideas as to where I could look for where he would have served or been stationed?
Many thanks

I don't - sorry. But if you post your question on the Military board on this site, I bet you'll get a few answers. Good luck.

My Great-grandfather joined the Seaforth Highlanders in the early 1880s. Working his way through the ranks, eventually retiring as Major, by 1910 he was Barrack Master of Meerut Barracks, India. So the title was still in use in the early 20th century.
