Marriage :William J Clare to Emma c1870
« on: Friday 31 October 08 15:22 GMT (UK) »
I would be grateful if anyone could throw any light as to who Emma was-no  one in the family seems to know and my searches haven't thrown anything up.William was b1851 in North Crawley and Emma was also born in North Crawley. The 1881 Census shows them as marriedwith 5 children and living in North Crawley. The eldest child was b 1872.
Any help would be greatly appreciaated

Nothing obvious on FreeBMD  - only possible is a William Clare in 1869 - but only one bride transcribed.

Getting a birth cert for one of the children will be the best thing, it will give Emma's maiden name.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Regarding son John (3 yr old John E. in 1881), this seems to be the birth registration:

John Ellis CLARE Dec 1877 Newport Pagnell 3a 591.

I wonder whether the Ellis might be a clue to Emma's maiden name?

Marriage:

Dec 1870

CLARE John
ELLIS Emma

Newport Pagnell  3a 805

I wonder whether this is William John Clare using only his middle name for some reason?

William John Clare does seem to have been known as "John" before marriage - probably because with his father being William it would have been too confusing otherwise.  The Clare family, including 9 yr old "John", was in North Crawley in 1861:  RG9/872/80/15.

Many thanks Anna-this is certainly the icing on the cake as far as this part of the family goes.
Best wishes
