Town Crier Presteigne
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 15:55 GMT (UK) »
Have just discovered that one of my ancestors a John
Meredith c 1800-5 was,according to 1861+71 census a town
crier at Presteigne Radnorshire.

Does anyone know if there would be records or possibly
photos re.John?

                Thankyou
               Jackie.

Hello
This is only an idea but I would imagine when Town criers are appointed their appointment would be recorded in the Town council's minute book etc. I would have thought these records would be in Powys Record Office.

Its possible Town Criers would have been listed in Kellys and other Directories

I note Presteigne still maintains a Town Crier. It maybe worth you writing to the town council -here is their web page and there is even an email address on the page

Hope you get lucky

A recent Presteigne Town Crier was Tony who owned the Fish and Chip Shop [and very nice they were too.]
He was of course called by the locals The Town Fryer   :) :)
