Kerrison. Poplar, Middx (now Tower Hamlets)
« on: Monday 03 November 08 09:49 GMT (UK) »
Been trying for years to find my family history, Have only got back as far as my GGrandfather Samuel George Kerrison for certain.  He was in merchant navy and died at sea, He married a (Heather?) Jane Armstrong and had son Samuel George who was born in Melbourne SA. 1881 Census puts mother and son in Poplar, no mention of father so assume he was already dead at time of census, no other info.  I would dearly love to go back further and posibly tie these Kerrisons with those of Norfolk.
My family tree is posted on my website.
I am trying to tie in the Kerrison Family of Poplar, East London with those of Norfolk.

Hi John

The son Samuel was born in 1875 SA is that right?

By "mother and son in Poplar" 1881 - do you mean  1861? Where Samuel senior is age 11,  b  Poplar, and  is in Poplar with his mother Isabella and other siblings? Birth registered 1849  Poplar, Samuel George KERRISON.

Cheers

WOW!  Funny enough I just got the birth cert for Samuel Kerrison, father and mother Richard and Isabella! Think they may be the right ones as the dates are about right and so is the area, plus there was only one sam born +- 5 years of that.  Wish I were sure.
The 1881 Census puts Jane Kerrison and Son Samuel at 6 Dee St Poplar.
Samuel was born 10/10/1875 Bourke St, Melbourne, South Australia.

In 1861 the 'brother' living in the household, was born Norfolk, Clay (prolly CLEY NEXT THE SEA)

in 1841, less than 5 miles west in WELLS NEXT THE SEA is this family ...

1841 - HO107/772/17; Wells Next The Sea; District: 4; Folio: 32; Page: 14
'Leeders Yard'

all born in County ..

Geo Kerrison 52  Shipwright
Jane Kerrison 52
Richard Kerrison 19
Mary Kerrison 16

The brother in 1861 was a ships carpenter, so George above being a shipwright is a good link .... and of course, George is yer mauns middle name - all positive pointers.

I'd get that Marriage Cert to see if Richards dad was in fact a George ....

Certainly the right family for Samuel (Richard and Isabella) I would think. His son Samuel born in Sydney is showing with grandfather Richard in 1891 in Poplar:

Richard Kerrison 66, shipwright, widower, b. Cly. Norfolk
William Kerrison 25, son , b. Bromley
Samuel Kerrison 15, grandson, b. Sydney, Australia
James McGregor 35, son in law, b. Bethnal Green
Hannah McGregor 35, daughter, b. Limehouse
Henry Tidder 46, boarder, b. Stepney

Just putting a link to the other post on the Scottish board www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,338763.0.html

twas Samuel (a widower in that 1861 Poplar address) - thought I'd seen him married up in Yorkshire in 1851, but cant be sure now !

HO107/2327; Folio: 490; Page: 31

On 2nd thoughts it might have been Samuel Harrison - a joiner born Norfolk, Clay, in 1851 Wakefield - dubious if its a typoo - the H altho different from others on the page is totally different to the one in the name 'Kitchen' .... just below.

Good find Monica !

PS. Didnt see this daughter in the 1861, unless she's really Isabella jnr and age is wrong ?

Hannah McGregor 35, daughter, b. Limehouse
