Thanks Suz,
You have been a great help.  Is  there any chance of checking if John c 1821 Cork is around in 1841 as it might give me a clue when he came over from Ireland, I am unsure if he is married. If he is not there then it means he came out 1841-44. And I am going to be really greedy and ask if you can find John and Catherine in the 1871 census possibly in Maesteg so I can see if they had anymore children.
I am most grateful for your time
Kind regards
Shauna

Hi Shauna,

I have been looking at the census -and I don't think the John and Catherine I gave you in 1851 are "your" John and Catherine!!!

Furthermore (the images are very messy -and difficult to read in parts) - Miles Donovan (the son) -although his name is transcribed as Miles -and looks (although not very clear) like Miles on the image - I think he is infact Michael Donovan --- and what's more he married a Catherine Donovan -whose possibly had a relative called ...wait for it...... John Donovan!!!!!!!!!

Be back in a mo with the census

Here we go

ths is most likely your John and catherine in 1851 -although address is difficult to read -it looks like it is the same address as in 1861!

1851
Ganlwyd maesteg Glamorgan

Jim (or Tim?) Connor Head M 47 Labourer Ironworks Ireland
Mary wife 35 Ireland
Patrick Cathon Lod U 21 lab iron Works Ireland
James Donovan Lod U 21 Lab Iron Works Bridgend Glamorgan
Mary Connor daughter U8 bridgend Glamorgan
Margaret Connor daughter 8 Bridgend Glamorgan
Catherine Conr daghter 5 Bridgend Glam
Daniel Conor 6mth Cwmdu Glam
JOHN DONOVAN Lod M 30 Lab Iron works Ireland
CATHERINE DONOVAN Lod M 34 ireland
MICHAEL DONOVAN 9 Lod Ireland

HO107 2461 69 46

(I know Michael (aka Miles) is shown as b ireland -but maybe that is just a mistake by the enumerator or whoever gave the enumerator the information.???????

Then (this is pretty straight forward)

1871

5 maesteg Row
Measteg glamorgan
John Donovan Head M 50 Lab Iron works Ireland
Catherine wife 52 Ireland
Mary daughter U 19 maesteg glamorgan
Patsy Leonard (male) Boarder U 19 labourer Ironworks Maesteg glam
Frederick Wilks Boarder u 27 Lab iron Works Gloucester
RG10 541395 16

then have you seen the 1881 census ?
RG10 5413 95 16
This is how I read the mage
4 Company Row Maesteg Glam
MICHAEL DONOVAN Head M 36 Labourer Newport Mon
Catherine wife M 26 Aberavon Glam
Mary C daughter 8 maesteg glam
Ann daughter 7 measteg glam
John son 4 maesteg Glam
Ellen daughter 2 maesteg Glam
Michael son 10 mths mesteg Glam
John Donovan Boarder W or M? 46 lab Aberavon Glam
Mary Donovan Boarder M 46 Nottingham

Hi Suz,
Wow, you have been wonderful to find all that info. It is confusing abt Miles. I agree that Michael is definately a son particularly as his daughter Mary C is recorded with him in 1881 and also with John as a grand daughter in 1881( a double recording).  I was trying to discover if William Donovan who married Mary Davies (marriage not found) living at 12 Company Maesteg Row in 1881 was also  related (this is the line I am tracing)  but it appears that maybe his daughter Catherine who was born 1855 Aberavon was the one who married Michael.  If John was William's brother that would mean Michael and Catherine would be 1st cousins. so perhaps they arnt related.  Does it say how old Michael is in 1851?
I really appreciate your help and I hope I havent confused you to much
Many thanks again

Hi,
have edited 1851 - Michael is age 9 -  trust me to miss off the biggest clue!!!!!

I think Catherine who married Michael was the daughter of Dennis and margaret.

Will do a little digging and see if there is a connection to William of 1881
