James Wilson, Battersea
« on: Tuesday 04 November 08 15:15 GMT (UK) »
I wonder can anyone help me?  My great grandmother Mabel Sophie Fanny Wilson, came from a fairground family, I have found mention of her and her family on the 1901 census when they were living in Gurlings Yard in Battersea.  She married Frank Fisher in Battersea in 1908, I don't think he was a traveller. I have her brother's name Charles Wilson (who nobody in the family can remember) and her mother's Christian name Sarah, but no maiden name.  I know there is no birth certificate for Mabel as there was confusion when her 100th birthday was (she lived to be 103).  She told me when I was a child, her mother used to swing weights attached to her long hair around her head and it eventually crippled her, I've also been told she was a money lender for women.  I have an old photo of James and Sarah, which shows him wearing a sash which says 'Pride of Battersea'.  Frank Fisher died in 1927, Mabel struck up a relationship with Thomas Penfold which resulted in a child being born.  Considering she came from a travelling family, once she married she lived her whole life within a mile of Gurlings yard!

I am completely stuck on this branch of the family and am hoping someone knows something!

Hi

16yr old Thomas Penfold was also living at Gurlings Yard in 1901.  He was the son of Christopher & Patience.

There are also 2 other Penfold families in Gurlings Yard - Robert & Mary and  James & Mary Ann.  On earlier pages - Gurlings Yard is described as "caravans and barns"
