Dear CU,

1.  Died of Wounds
2.  Medals returned to Sender for some reason.  They would then be kept for quite a long time by the authorities before being broken up and disposed of.

Hope this helps.

Thank you. His Mother had died before the war and his father in 1917. My Grandfather was in the WW1, but lived at his married address not Cuthbert home address .So I don't know where they sent them. I wonder if it would be possible to get them now?
Thanks for your help.

Hello CU,

King's Regulation 1743 states: " Medals which, at the end of 10 years, still remain unclaimed, will be sent to the .......deputy director of ordnance stores, Royal Dockyard (Medal Branch), Woolwich .......to be broken up."

There may be an address on the back of the card, but as he was not an officer, it is highly unlikely. I have tried to check, but Ancestry is on overload again at the moment. Try the link below, later, when things are quieter:

Unfortunately, it is not possible to claim them now.

Thanks Phil for the information. No he wasn't a Officer, just an ordinary lad.

It's sad that there is nothing to show for the life he gave.

Will take a look at the site later.

Thank you
