I married the son of a Ukie and a Bella Russ. When I started tracing my family, I thought in unfair on my worst half, sorry better half, that I had hundreds of relations on a very large section of wallpaper and he only had his sister, mum and dad two uncles and four grandparents that were known.
So 27 years later we have communicated with mums sisters in Bella Russ and got a few cousins but the Ukie side remains a mystery.
In the beginning I tried the IGI for the Ukraine but found that it was full of Germans, French and English names, no or very, very few Ukie names.
We did contact a worldwide organisation many years ago with help in getting mum in law's birth certificate, she is classed a displaced person and her country and the neighbouring country both say the other has the info - what a palava. We do get an update on a regular basis, annually, saying that they are still looking, but if we contact them her request may go further down the pile instead of up !!
So I've come to the conclusion, I should have not watched Taras Bulba when I was young , I may not have married an English Ukie and would not have had to bypass my part of my childrens heritage.
Saying that any one with Ukie connections know 'Ukie time' - if it says start at 4pm it may be going by 5ish or 6is, so things are slower.
But they do know how to organise a good wedding, John's Day or any other day they wish to have.
On a serious note, when communication with establishments either by mail or email, do try to send your request in the native word. There are translator programs on the internet that are very good and easy to use, if you have no one who can translate for you.
But most of all be very patient
