tracing a marriage in campsie
« on: Friday 07 November 08 00:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi ,am doing my family tree and I am trying to finish up the scottish side.
Iam looking for a marriage cert for a Margaret Harvey who married a John Docherty originally from Donegal Ireland.
They were apparantly married in Campsie according to my gran.Does anyone know how I would get a record of the marriage from the church in Campsie? They were married around the early 1860s and moved back to ireland.
If anyone has any details of the church or address I would really appreciate it.Thanks

Hi net64

The only marriage that is coming up for a Margaret  Harvey (variations)  to a Docherty around then is in Glasgow High Church  on 3 June 1864. However, the groom was a Daniel Docherty  :-\

I'll do some more searching although I did put in a wide search. Unfortunately the sites that I search on are very slow at the moment  :(

This information is on the IGI (extracted) www.familysearch.org or a full certificate can be viewed and downloaded form Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. This is pay to view but very reasonable - the cert will cost 6 units + £1.20.

Charles Doherty, b. 1865 Moville, Donegal (extracted)
James Doherty, b. 1867 Moville, Donegal (extracted)
Hugh Doherty, b. 1879 Mount Argus, Donegal (submitted)

Births from the IGI ... so we are looking at early 1860s.

There is plenty of Doherty (and variants) marriages in Campsie between 1855 and 1875 but only one for a John. However, it's to a Rose Shannon.

Was Margaret also from Ireland? If not, you could try finding her in the 1861 (or 1851) census in Scotland.

I've now looked at all marriage registrations for a Marg H*rv* and Harvey (soundex)  between 1855 and 1870 and there's still only the Daniel Docherty one coming up. None of the  other surnames look anything like Docherty.

Could they have married in Ireland?

PS - on the 1861 there is only the John (45) and Rosy (40) couple showing in Campsie. Both are b. Ireland and John is a coal miner.

net64,

Do you know the names or dates of birth of any children of theirs.

And whether they were supposed to have been born in Scotland or in Ireland?

Do you have the children in the 1901 Irish census?

hume24 those three dohertys are john and margarets children(3 of 10!).They were all born in Donegal.John Doherty and Margaret Harvey moved to Donegal when they married.
Margaret is down on the 1901 census for ballyargus as being from Donegal but this is wrong as on the 1911 census she is down as being scottish. As far as I know this is right as my gran said that she was married from Campsie.
This is the side that I am stuck on as I cannot find their wedding or her birth and I dont know her parents names.
I cannot find anything on Scotlands people  and getting a birth is desperate as there seem to be millions of Margaret Harveys!
By the way Johns parents were Charles Doherty and Margaret Limerick, both Irish if that helps.
Gadget thanks also for your help, if you come across anything else please let me know.

Hi again

Do you have an approximate birth year for Margaret Harvey?

And what religion where they?

Hi Gadget a rough estimate would be 1839 to 1849
On the 1901 donegal census she was down as 55(born 1846)
On the 1911 donegal census she was down as 72(born 1839)
On her death cert( died 1927)    she was down as 78( born 1849)
As you know half the time they just guessed their ages!
All the Dohertys  on my side are catholic but thats not to say that she was. She could easily be church of scotland
