Are you certain that is what it says -could it be a "plaiter"?

Would you like to give details of which census and who is described as having this occupation??

Plaiter - someone who makes straw plaits used in making hats

or could it be "plaicher" = hedge layer
(also known as Plasher, Platcher, Pleacher)

Hiya SUZ its 1861 census William and Ann Fensom .Ann is a Plailer or thats what it looks like and Georgiana is the daughter.Cheers Julie

Could you tell us area -ages, census ref

As its a female occupation it most probably is plaiter-but I would like to take a look at the census.

When you are reading the old writing - remember they were noted FOR dotting the "i"s and NOT crossing the "t"s

.....and when a double "s" occurs -the first "s" is usally long (sometimes both) so it can look like "fs" or "ff"

I think I've found it!  I too have what looks like Plailer, in an 1871 Census in Buckinghamshire.  Most of the wives are listed as this, but on the previous pages they are Straw plailers, ie Straw plaiters.  Other occupations are Brushmakers, so a related occupation.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_plaiting.
