Which regiment was my grandad in? COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 12 November 08 15:35 GMT (UK) »
This is a pic of my London grandad Henry Albert Mockridge Rogers, born 1891 and living in the Kensal Green area.

With the surname being fairly common I haven't yet been able to find his service record. In fact I have no idea which regiment he served in.
Can anyone help me,with details from this pic?

I have found a medal roll card for a Henry A Rogers number 225002 with the 1st London....but how can I tell if it's him?

He worked at the Regent Palace Hotel in London as an accountant for over 50 years.I have the gold watch presented to him in 1955.

Many thanks

Carol

Hi Carol Going by the shape and form of his cap badge I would say that he was a member of the Royal Artillery, possibly a driver going by the spurs that he would have been wearing at the time that this photograph was taken, as you can may out the strap of the spurs at the top of the laces on his boots

He also has the "mounted" ptn greatcoat on and his puttees are wound downwards...ie mounted style!!
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Thank you both, not that I understand a word of the above  :P

So I can narrow it down to the 20 or so Henry Rogers's who won medals serving for the RFA?

The greatcoat is the offcial cut and style that was worn by mounted troops..ie on horse back. it is shorter than the normal infantry pattern (ptn) and is double breasted.

The puttees are the fabric bands wrapped from knee to boot. Infantry tied them from boot to knee, mounted troops vice versa, so as they did  not unwind when rubbing against the horses flank.

There were also drivers in the Royal Artillery, as most of the guns were horse drawn...

Have you his medals? It will give a Regt number and his Regt on the rim

Ahhhh right- that makes it clearer now-many thanks.

Generations of his family were omnibus drivers and coachmen,so I guess he had horses in the blood!

Sadly I don't have the medals for either grandad- the other was in the Cheshires-although my mum does remember seeing his as a child.

I will google a bit now and see what else I can find out.
