completed Paint Works, Manchester???
« on: Friday 14 November 08 12:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have just received a 1914 birth cert for a Gt Uncle whose birth was registered as 11 Thompson St, Cheetham, Manchester. Father was a Paint Works Labourer. Any idea where the paint works was???

This was the only child born in this area as all others registered before and after were born Liverpool and this child's death was registered in Liverpool 12 months later.

Andi

Andi - the only paint works I can remember was Johnstones that was either Gorton or Openshaw in the 1970s. It could be worth a keyword search on the Historical Directories site to see if anything comes up nearer.

There is also
HMG Paints Ltd (Head Office)
Riverside Works
Collyhurst Road
Manchester
M40 7RU

I have no idea how long they are been there - but may be worth a try!
Nearer to Cheetham than Gorton or Openshaw ....!!

eg

Acme Paint Co - Anderton & Sons - Baxendale

Send me a PM with your email addy and I will forward a copy of the page to you.

Thanks for that - I had no idea when they started, but knew they had been around for a long time!!!  They have a submarine in the grounds that you can see from the metrolink - it looks as though it has dive bombed into the grounds!!
