Re: Cartrefle, St Asaph R.D. Flintshire. [Place name used on Birth Certificates for births that took place at the Workhouse Infirmary, St Asaph from 1904]

In Summary  "The Registrar-General stated that he proposed to omit all direct reference to the Workhouse in future entries of births, and enquiring by what alternative address the Guardians proposed to describe the Workhouse". RESULT :"that all births which take place at the workhouse be henceforth registered as having taken place at Cartrefle, St Asaph". This is St Asaph Union Workhouse which is on the site of what is now called H M Stanley Hospital, St Asaph.

Evidence:-

1. Here is the information about  the start of use of CARTREFLE  on Birth certificates issued by The ST ASAPH BOARD OF GUARDIANS 1904 See Rhyl Record and Advertiser  12 Nov 1904 page 5 Column e.  See full report here https://newspapers.library.wales/view/3640509/3640514/31/cartrefle%20AND%20st%20asaph

Part of Transcript
"ST ASAPH BOARD OF GUARDIANS - Fortnightly Meeting......."RESPECTABLEISING THE WORKHOUSE. Mr T. C. Jones moved a resolution of which he had given notice, that all births which take place at the workhouse be henceforth registered as having taken place at Cartrefle, St Asaph"
He saw from the agenda that the Registrar-General was about to ask them to do what they intended asking him to do. ..... Suffice it to say that he thought the change desirable on many grounds. The Vice-chairman seconded the motion. For the information of some of the members it was explained that Cartrefle meant homestead. ..... Mr Trehearn thought that the Infirmary, Denbigh Road, St Asaph, would be a better address, but his suggestion met with no support, ...... Without further ado Mr T. C. Jones' motion was agreed to. It was reported that a letter had been received from the Registrar-General stating that he proposed to omit all direct reference to the Workhouse in future entries of births, and enquiring by what alternative address the Guardians proposed to describe the Workhouse. It was decided to inform the Registrar-General of the resolution passed by the Board that day."
