If you search in BNA or FindMyPast newspapers for Sergeant Cogan in Sussex newspapers you will find lots of mentions of him.

So that solves the mystery of him being a colour sergeant but there being no mention of him in the regular army records. We haven't solved the mystery of where he is in the Crimean War medal rolls. Perhaps he served under a different name.

There is a Private James Coogan in the medal roles, so that might be him. He certainly looks as if he's got the Crimea medal, with bars, in the pictures.

No that's not him. That man was 3446, 17th Regiment, and at the time of the 1861 census he was in Canada. James Cogan was in Hove.
