US social security records.
« on: Wednesday 19 November 08 20:39 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if I can access US social security records?  My mother's cousin, Theodora Moody, emigrated in 1957 with her father.
She died in 1993, I have her social security number. Is this date too recent to access, if at all, or would it be depend on legislation in the state where she settled?
Thanks, Adie.

You can see the Social Security Death Index here:  http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/  If you search under her name, you'll see a link that says "SS-5 Letter".  If you click on that, it will generate a letter to send to Social Security.  What you would get from them is a copy of her original application for her Social Security card.  Some of the information that could be on there are:

Employee's First, Middle and Last Name (Married women were to provide First Name, Maiden Last Name and Husband's Last Name)
Street Address
Post Office and State
Employer's Name If Presently Employed
Employer's Address
Age At Last Birthday
Date of Birth (Month, Day and Year)
Place of Birth
Father's Full Name Regardless Of Whether Living or Dead
Mother's Full Maiden Name Regardless Of Whether Living or Dead
Sex: Male or Female
Color
Give Date You Became An Employee
Have You Ever Filled Out A Card Like This Before? (If yes, the applicant was to provide the place and date where the card was previously completed.)
Today's Date
Employee's Signature As Usually Written

Many thanks for your replies, a lot of useful info there. I can now piece together Theo's life in Connecticut.

Thanks again.
