seeking a lookup of the 1871 census for Walter Southgate, born in combs Suffolk 1834.
His wife was Charlotte. They married in London in 1862. I dont know if they had any children. I cant find them in 1881 either.

I can't see him either so went back a bit:
Family Search has him- parents Richard adn Martha

1841  HO107; Piece 1035; Book: 12;Folio: 27; Page: 16
with parents Richard and Martha in Stowmarket

Is this him in 1851 ? transcribed as Walter (no surname)
1851 - HO107; Piece: 1562; Folio: 157; Page: 26

Queens Gardens Bermondsey

Richard Southgate head 54 yrs labourer b Creeting Green Suffolk
Walter son 16 yrs
b Stowmarket Suffolk

As you don't mention these years, you perhaps already have them but I thought it may help others to know that he somewhere  ;)

However- I can't see him in 1861- do you have him pptaylor?

As Sue says there are no marriages in Free BMD for Walter. What was Charlotte's surname and place of birth?

Hi All. Thanks for your help. That is Walter with his father Richard. His mother was Martha Moys and the IGI entry is the correct one.
I dont have a marriage certificate but was going on info from a family member. Perhaps they were wrong though. It would sem likely that Walter and Matilda are the right couple as I had looked through Free BDm and couldnt find any reference to a marriage either.
Thanks again for your help. I think I might work with the Walter/ Matilda couple. A mariage certificate should tell me if he is Richards son.
Cheers ;D

I don't think that is your Walter- he is shown as born Norton Suffolk on 3 censuses with Matilda and in earlier censuses he his shown as that too.
In 1851 he is there with a host of siblings and in 1861 is a servant in Old Newton.
The Walter you are chasing, is already in the London area in 1851  ???

IGI has a number of children of Richard and Martha including a John.
There is a submission for a marriage for him to Emma Brown in 1857. This couple are in the 1861 census.
Also in the 1861 census, Richard snr seems to be with daughter Caroline and family in Rotherhithe,
1861 has a Richard Southgate b c  1832 Combs, living with wife ELizabeth in Bethnal Green.
All this is frustrating  ::) Perhaps  further checks with the family member are needed.

sorry to keep going on but 1871 has Richard snr with son John and Emma. They have a son Walter b 1870.
The Walter we are seeking seems to disappear - can't spot a death either.

Hi.
Yes, the whole Southgate family moved into the London area except some of the children who had died young in Suffolk.
John [married to Emma was the first to move before the 1841 census. John Southgate married Emma Brown in 1857. This is my direct line.
I would love to be able to find Emma in 1841/51 but with a name like Brown I am hesitant to post a request, plus the fact that on 3 census she gives her birthplace as 3 different places > bemondsey in 1861, Camberwel 1871 and Deptford 1881 ??? I presume these places might all be close together.
She didnt know who her father was. The space was blank on her marriage certificate in 1857 so I dont think she would be with a family in the 1851 census. Her mother must not have been around to ask. She was born about 1837.

Caroline Southgate married Charles Dean.
Elizabeth Southgate >wherabouts  unknown
Sarah Southgate . > Wherabouts unknown
Henry Southgate married Mary and Benson and came to Australia where a tragic story unfolds  :(

Pam, this is a very old message, but I'm curious about the tragic story of Henry SOUTHGATE and Mary BENSON who moved to Australia. I'm trying to connect a young child (b.c.1855) to this BENSON family, and I suspect an adoption of some sort, for reasons I can only guess at. Would you be willing to share any further details?
