Trying to find marriage of Jane Watkins of Knighton to Louis Chauveau, c.1860. Also would like to know if Bowling Green Cottage in Knighton is still standing.

Hi Hoople and welcome to Rootschat  :)

How sure are you of Jane's maiden name?

I can find a marriage for Louis in Shoreditch, June quarter 1866, volume 1c page 402:

BAALHAM  Jane
BUTLER  Eliza A or BUTTER  Eliza A
Chauveau  Louis
Marson  Edward H

Do you have the birth certificate of any of their children to confirm the maiden name?

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thanks for the welcome, Arranroots. I have seen that Louis Chauveau marriage ref. but I am sure about the Jane Watkins. They had children in 1860, 65 + 68. All lived with mother and grandfather (George Watkins) in Knighton, but Louis is never mentioned in Censuses.

How mysterious!

I don't think I'm going to be much use to you for the marriage but could you tell me what info is on the children's birth (and marriage?) certificates if you have them & I'll keep looking on the census.

Specifically, what occupation** and are there any other CHAUVEAU relations as witnesses?

There's an Alexander in London who might be Louis in disguise, if he remarried, for example?

I think Jane died in Knighton in 1877?

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

**Edit - I see Jane is paper dyer's wife in 1871 RG10/5596/17/16 in Knighton

Thanks Arranroots. Yes, Jane is listed as a Paper Dyers wife also on the 1860 birth cert. of her son Louis George Chauveau. Jane died in 1877, as you say, at Bowling Green Cottage, Knighton, and is said to be 'wife' of Louis Nicolas Chauveau. I'm still awaiting birth cert. of son, Edward John Chauveau, 1865 in Clerkenwell district.

Well, the Alexander I found in 1881 is a slipper maker, so that seems unlikely to be the same chap!

What do the children say on their marriage certs about their father, or don't you have these yet?

I had another look but I confess I made no progress.

Just received birth cert. of Edward John Chauveau, born at 40, Great Sutton St. Clerkenwell, 1865. Father, Louis Nicolas Chauveau is a Globe Glass Cutter. On his son's marriage cert. in 1882 he is listed as a Glassblower. No mention of him as 'deceased'. The death registered in 1875 (especially looking at his age) could be his father!
