Completed Harry and Sarah Kensit 1841, 1851 etc
« on: Sunday 23 November 08 05:04 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please look up the census for the following family for the years 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1891 and 1901 please.

Harry Kensit c1771
Sarah c1771
Joseph c1806
Susanna c 1806

1841 living at Holborn in "Findmypast' but not on "ancestry" website.

Would like to know if there is any more information on this family and if they are actually Kensits. There is a possibility they moved to US or South Africa.

thanks

Hi Julie

Died The Times, Thursday, Jul 19, 1832
On the 16th inst,, Mary Anne , the wife of Mr. R. A. Coward, of Brixton, and daughter of Henry Kensit, Esq, of Bedford Row, age 33

Died The Times, Tuesday, Jan 10, 1854;
On the 6th inst, at his residence, No. 20 Charlotte Street, Bedford Square, after long illness, age 52, Joseph Edward Kensit, Esq, 3rd son of the late Henry Kensit,  Esq, of Nr 29 Bedford Row

Unbelievably, try Kensel again in 1851.....well actually it does look like KENSEL, but the dot of the "i" is there, right up by the "t", and the "t" is not crossed - you'll see the way the enumerator makes his "t's" elsewhere in a similar fashion, whereas his "l's" have a loop at the top.

1851: 20 Charlotte St -  George Bloomsbury, Middlesex
HO107 /  Piece: 1507 /  Folio: 282 / Pg 32
Head; Joseph E KENSIT 48, Pensioner Court of Chancery F----- -----, b Shoreditch, Middlesex
Wife; Susanah S KENSIT 48, b Shoreditch, Middlesex
Plus 3 servants

Cheers

Hi Julie
Susannah...

Again , has been read as "Kensil" - again an enumerator who doesn't cross his "t's":
1861: 20 Charlotte St, St Georges Bloomsbury, Middlesex
RG9 /  Piece: 166 /  Folio: 96 /  pg 24
Head: Susannah S KENSIT 54, widow,  Landed Proprietor, b Shoreditch
Plus 2 servants

Again, has been read as "Kensil" - again an enumerator who doesn't always cross his "t's":
1871:  20 Charlotte St, St Georges Bloomsbury, Middlesex
RG10 /  Piece: 339 /  Folio: 59 /  pg 5
Head: Susannah S KENSIT 68, widow, Occ: None, b St Lukes ....? (Mall?), Middlesex
Plus 2 servants

FINALLY she had to move out of Bloomsbury first, but then they got her marital status wrong!
1881 : 23 Campden Hill Road, Kensington
RG11 / Piece: 27 /  Folio: 114 /  pg 1`5
Head: Henry KENSITT 89, widr, Solicitor Ret (ired) b Bishopsgate, Middlesex
Sis: Susannah KENSITT 78, unm, Inc. der'd from div'ds, b Shoreditch Middlesex (income derived from dividends)
Plus 5 servants, and a visitor (daughter?)  to one of the servants

No doubt, Henry KENSITT here in 1881 is another son of Henry and Sarah - so Susannah's brother in law.

One of the other sons of Henry (Sarah) is probably a Thomas Glover KENSIT, also a solicitor who was married and did have at least one child. He is in 1881 Census as a widower in his 80's with a 44 year  old daughter

So, Harry and Sarah, deceased before 1851.
Son, Joseph deceased 1852 and his widow Susannah died  1887
All in England

All  relevant Census found for the 4 people in your request.
It would appear Joseph and Suannah never had children.
Henry snr  had at least 3 sons ( Henry jnr, Thomas Glover? and , Joseph Edward,)  and apparently, at least 1 daughter, Mary Anne.

If you search the Nat archives simply with the word "KENSIT" there are a number of items of interest (including Henry's will) :

A number of Court of Chancery items in Nat Archives, Re: Henry KENSIT (may be the son or the father)
A number of references to Thomas Glover KENSIT (or Thomas Rover KENSIT which is possibly the same person).

Probably could find oodles more  - but will wait and see, if the fact none of these is gone to US or South Africa means they are not 'yours?

Also found this - which may fit in someplace:
Died: The Times Saturday, Sep 25, 1886;
On the 21st Sept, at 20 Bedford Road, Tottenham, Middelsex,  Mary, widow of the late Henry Kensit GLOVER, age 72 years

Wow! What a wealth of information.

As far as I can tell, most of the Kensits are related. So the family who went to South Africa and this family are still related.  There are quite a few transcribed as Kensil or Kensitt.

I didn't realise this was the same family as Henry and Sarah as the dates and names (Harry) were different due to 1841 census. The info I got from Pedigree Resource file had Henry and Susanah as sisters (probably due to the 1881 census)

Info I have, mainly from family search.org (need to clarify if it is correct)
Henry and Sarah Glover 1767 - 1841 had 9 children:
Henry 1791 - 1882 who married Ann?
Mary Ann 1793 - 1837?
George 1793 - 1795
Thomas Glover 1795 - 1884 who married Janet Gregg 1797 - 1876
Sarah Glover 1797 - 1797
Mary Ann 1798 - 1832? married Richard Atkinson Coward
Joseph Edward 1801-1854 married Susanh Sophia
Rev George Robert 1805-1879 married Georgina Mary Mordaunt
Charles 1806-1812

Sarah Glover had a brother William who married Ann Kensit 1774, brother of Henry. They had 2 children Henry Kensit Glover, married to Mary (which I didn't know, thanks to you) (also had 2 children Henry Kensit Glover and William Kensit Glover) and Sarah Kensit Glover.

Henry Kensit also had a brother Joseph 1766 (who as far as I can tell, was my 4th great grandfather).

Thanks so much for this information. It fills a lot of holes.

In regards to the South America family:

William 1830 and Sophia Kensit 1829, brother and sister were born in South Africa.

Sophia married Harry Bolus and William married Harriet and had at least 4 children in South Africa.

I would like to find who their parents were.

One of your ancestors, George Kensit, son of Thomas Glover Kensit and Janet Kensit, used to live in my house in Beckenham, Kent. He was a solicitor and was christened in the City of London. If you like I can send you some photos of the house. He lived with a family called Curtis who were upholsterers, father, mother and children. But then they moved out and he continued to live there. Let me know.

I cant provide you with a massive amount of information that isn't publically available. Harry Bolus was my great grandfather's brother, and was a famous botanist. He came out to South Africa to serve an apprenticeship under William Kensit who was a merchant in Grahamstown. Some time later he married Sophie, William's daughter.btw my grandfather Walter Bolus was born in Beckenham, and his uncle Dr Harry Boulcott Bolus was living there around WWI as well. I'm not sure if it was the same house as referred to earlier though.
