A friend asked me if I knew anything about this guy.
"he first appears in the Baltimore Immigration Records stating he stepped ashore from the Bark John Bell out of New Ross May 14 1849.

He led an interesting life as a US Cavalryman on the South Western Frontier, ending up as virtual overlord of Lincoln County New Mexico in the turbulent days of the late 1870's now known as 'The Lincoln County War',a remarkable outbreak of violence that gave to history and legend the character universally known as 'Billy the Kid'(real name W H McCarty).

Major Murphy has been vilified in numerous books and movies bent on hagiographicizing (is there such a word?!) the Kid,I believe unfairly. His obit stated that he was born in Wexford and educated in Maynooth"

Anyone know anything or have any leads?
