Hello mcmahon100,

Absolutely delighted to read your posting. I am the great granddaughter of Margaret (McMahon) Carroll, sister of Thady. I have been trying for a long  time to find out about the McMahon family and managed to obtain quite a bit of information on some of Thady's siblings (all girls) but Thady remained pretty elusive after the 1901 Limerick Census.

I would love to learn more about Thady and his family and am more than happy to share what information I have.
In order to send you a pm (personal message), you need to have 3 posts on Rootschat , so if you'd like to post in a couple more, I'll be able to contact  you via that system.

Chat again soon I hope.

Hi mcmahon100,

I've managed to find Thady's family on Limerick 1911 census, living in Upper Cecil Street. I have also located an obituary for Thady.

Hello again!

I saw the information about Thady's family on the census which is very interesting. i have some info regarding Bella who is my granddad's grandmother. She was a piano teacher in Dublin and she taught her grandchildren piano.  Phyllis, Bella's granddaughter is named after her (Phyllis's first name is Isabella). I would be delighted to receive any more info you have on the McMahon's.

Hi Siobhan,
I'm Timothy and Bella McMahon's grandaughter.
Timothy senior married Katherine Hurley in Quin Co.Clare. They had four daughters and one son. They sold their family home and moved to County Limerick around 1870.Their last daughter Hannie was the only one born in Limerick.
They bought a public house and grocery business at the corner of no 1 Edward St.and 365 Carey's Road.
Timothy junior was not interested in the vitner business and trained as a photographer with Guys of Dublin. He set up a studio at no 121 O'Connell St. Limerick. He married Bella Kelly of Catherine St. Limerick and they had four sons.
He did go to America but only to compete in athletic events. The family subsequently moved to Coleraine Co. Derry. His eldest sons Gerard,Timothy ( Teddy) and Edward  were born in Limerick but the youngest Thomas (My Father) was born in Coleraine in 1907. Timothy died in 1908 when Thomas was just thirteen months old. Bella brought the family back to Limerick where they resided in 121 O'Connell St. She worked in the office of Fit's Auctioneers by day and taught the piano by night to provide for her family. When Gerard was old enough he served his time as a waiter and worked for "Lawlers Of Naas"a firm who specialised in race meetings. His mother gave him the money to start a similiar business for himself but instead he eloped with Ita Bryne. The had been going together for seven years so it wasn't exactly a flash in the pan. They had five children, Gerard ,Brian,Ita, Teddy and Eithne. Gerard junior had five children,Brian had eight by his first wife and when she died he married her sister and had more children with  her. Ita married Tommy Nevin and they had one daughter. They emigrated to America.Teddy married and had a family but I don't know how many. He died reasonably young . Eithne married Oliver Daly  in Dublin and they had three sons and one daughter Anne. They emigrated to Australia in the 1960's.
Timothy (Teddy) married Gretta in Athlone and they had three sons  Frank,Timothy and Ciaran and one daughter Bella. They reside in England but retained strong ties with Athlone.
Eddie married Rose Greene in Dublin and they have three daughters Anna,Phyllis and Rose and one son Tadhg, a twin to Phyllis.
Tommy married Mary Daly in Limerick and they had two sons Thomas and Timothy and three daughters Frances Linda and Triona.
Tommy and his wife Mary Gleeson have three sons and nine grandchildren.
Tim and his wife Anne Madigan have four sons and three grandchildren. Frances and her husband Paddy Moloney have four sons and one daughter and eleven grandchildren. Linda and her husband Cathal Scully have two sons and two daughters and one grand child and Triona and her husband Michael Moloney have two sons and one daughter.
Bella was reared by her uncle. She had one brother and one sister. The girls were sent to boarding school to the F.C.J. nuns in Bruff and were taught to be young Ladies. She was an  accomplished piano player.
Thomas as well as being  great athlete also played on the winning side of  the first all Ireland football final. An interesting fact is that the game was played in the late 1800's but for some reason the medals were not presented until 1900's by which time Timothy had died. Bella Whose name was actually Belinda died in 1946. Her mothers name was Sheridan.
Katherine mcmahon nee Hurley died in1888 and Timothy senior died in 1914 six years after his son

Hi mcmahon_moloney,

Delighted to read your posting and thank you so much for all this information which is absolutely fantastic to have. My grandmother was the daughter of Margaret Carroll, Thady's sibling. I really would like to send you a pm but you need 2 more postings before that can happen.

I'm also curious about Thady and Bella living in Coleraine as I have a death record for Thady occuring in Castleblaney, his home recorded as Clones.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Sioibhan,
I remember Maggie Carroll well. Thady definately lived in Coleraine in 1907 as my grandfather  birth certificate gives the home address as "Marybaudle "? road Coleraine. Thady died in Castleblaney hospital as it was the nearest hospital to Coleraine. If I remember anything else I'll let you know,
Regards
