Godfordson(Godferson) Completed
« on: Wednesday 26 November 08 12:46 GMT (UK) »
My gt.gt.gt Grandfather was Thomas Godfordson who married Sarah in 1808 in Sunderland.I am unable to find any reference to him other than his children.
I believe that he may have been a PRIVATEER and therefore I suppose that anything could have happened.
I have come across a marriage between Laurence Godferson and Elizabeth Wilson 0n 31 -03-1799 at St. Hilda's South Shields.
I think that Thomas and Laurence may have been siblings as it is such an uncommon name ;has anyone any ideas as to how I might prove/disprove this.
Many thanks in advance

Hi Davejack

You don't say where you came across the marriage, so have you tried the free IGI site for Durham Bishops' Transcripts  http://www.rootschat.com/links/04c3/

I was just posting to say exactly the same thing!

There is a vast amount of material to be trawled through in the Bishop's Transcripts.

Did you, for example, look for the marriage of Thomas and that of Laurence to see if there was anything in common? Both these marriages seem to have taken place during the era of Bishop of Durham Shute Barrington who required register entries to be made in some detail (father's name and native parish, for example). If you could find the two entries they might yield most useful information.

What the site fails to mention until you go into the transcripts is that it is not searchable by name, just by trawling page by page.

It's new search box front page gives the impression that if you put your names in, up they'll come  ::)

Dave you need to either click on the uk map or go to 'search entire collection' and click on Durham Trancriptions - Durham- etc

Marriages during the Barrington period did not have father's name or place of birth.  Baptisms and burials had more information but the marriages pretty stayed the same until 1837.  What you need is a child born between 1798 and 1812.

Hi everyone
Thanks for your help explaining the Bishop's Transcripts-it will certainly keep me busy searching through them and hopefully it will  be worthwhile.
Further to lynne j's point the confusion with his wife Sarah's maiden name seems to be a matter of how the hand writing has been interpreted-their children show Atkinson and their marriage shows Watson.
Once again thanks to all of you.
