The Invaluable Search Button
« on: Saturday 17 April 04 11:20 BST (UK) »
Rootschatters,

You may have noticed a Banner Link to the Search Button has recently appeared.  ;D

I would be lost without that little button.  Anyone who has not used it is missing out on a very powerful tool in Rootschat.

I have an interest in Railways,  so many of my ancestors seemed to work on them.  I have done a search on Railway and found so much to help me.  You can see:

- who else has a similar interest,
- all of the posted links,
- who has ancestors on the railway
- and who lived in Railway Terrace

all on one page.  All with shortcuts to their full threads.  8)

I use it to search for names,  categories and all sorts.  It really is worth doing a search before asking some more general questions as you often find it has been answered elsewhere.

Try a SEARCH today on your area of interest.  You may be surprised what you find.  ;D

Kazza.

Area Interests:

Rootschatters

I endorse every word that Kazza has said - it is a very powerful search tool - and I use it a lot myself to find messages that I have been working on a reply for.

But - There is a downside to it:

I used to sign all my posts "Chris in 1066Land (Hastings)" and one day when I had not been on line for a couple of days, I put 'Hastings' in the search button tool to see if anyone had posted anything to do with hastings whilst I was off line - and you know what !!

It came back with hundreds of messages that contained as part of the signature the word 'Hastings'

That is why I now only sign my name as

Chris in 1066Land

Hi,
Thanks for this. I only searched for my names, but I guess I know how these things work, and they are extremely useful.
Just a minor point, it is not entirely obvious (YES, I know it is, but) I would recommend a simpler message like ' search rootschat for' or something like this. I use a similar tool using google where people can search 'my site' or 'everywhere' depending on which checkbox they select, not as good looking, but more obvious.

Which message do you mean Kevan?

Hi Trystan,
I was referring to the new search button. I was just saying that it does not really state what you are searcging, although I know it is obvious.

Yes, you are right Kevan, its not terribly obvius what it's for - we are experimenting a little bit at the moment - we want to "FEATURE" the search button for a few days to get people to start using it (even thought the search has been there since day one!!)
