Hello Zed,

What a great picture.  :)

I don't know the official start date that would make this officially Army of Occupation.

Looking at the map, Carvin was certainly in the thick of it.

The only word I can make out on the frontage is "Offizier".

The inscription is possibly Siege Battery. If so then he is Royal Garrison Artillery.
Is there a number before it?

Phil

Ah yes indeed Neil & Phil ... I've examined the text with a magnifying glass, and "Seige Battery" it is! And the number before it is "39". Could you tell me what that means, please?

The lettering on the building is "Offizier" and then just on the other side of the gun in smaller lettering is the ending of a word which could be  "...hus" or "...hur"

Many thanks for helping me to understand grandpop's history  :)

I've had a quick google of "Carvin, France 1918" to find out what was happening at the time when the photo was taken, but so far haven't found any clues  ???
