Ambrose Cook DEAN

Please if someone has the Parsh records of marriages for Rushall could they look up a marriage for me,
 
 Ambrose Cook Dean or Ambrose Cook as Dean was later dropped from the surname, to a Maria b. 1816c Rushall  i am loking for Maria`s  surname,

As he doesn't feature on freeBMD, I take it that the marriage took place between about 1832 and 1837.   Does this fit in with any information you may have?

Hi Dave,

yes it must be as he was found on the 1841 census Rushall with wife Maria b. 1816 Rushall, then on 1851 census with wife Sarah b. 1823 Manniford no children as such on any of census, i have found a death of Maria Cooke  in Salisbury 1841 census, so maybe it was his first wife,

Hi, I was unable to find a death for Maria on freeBMD but it does show a marriage for Ambrose Cookdane (sic) and Sarah Newman 1846 Mar qtr, Pewsey District 8/569.   Sarah probably died 1872 and Ambrose 1886 - he was a widower in Upavon in 1881.

You probably have these details already but I'll have a look in Rushall PRs for Maria's marriage in the next few days.

I had a look at Rushall parish registers and discovered a very strange mix of names - Cooke, Deane and Cookdeane - so here it is!!

Marriage 26 Jul 1796, banns 3, 10, 17 Jul, John Deane, otp and Elizabeth Hodge, otp.   Witnesses John White and Joseph Potter.

Baptisms of children of John Cooke and Elizabeth, lab.   The children's names are all Deane............
30 Oct 1796 Susanna        29 Sep 1799 James         27 Dec 1801 Charles
19 Feb 1804 Jane              9 Nov 1806 William          22 Jul 1809 AMBROSE
9 Jul 1820 John
In addition 30 Apr 1815 Harriet Cookdeane dau of John and Elizabeth, lab

Also burials
10 Sep 1820 Elizabeth Cooke age 41
10 Sep 1820 John Cooke age 2 months.........now called Cooke

Ambrose is such an unusual name this could well be your family.

There were a number of Cooke and Deane marriages up to 1837, but no Ambrose.

Thank you so much for  looking for looking up this for me, it is getting confusing as my family  surname was Cook up until 1841 census then their surname changes to Cook/e or CookeDean/e  as your found etc,  these are my relations thank you so much,

It is confusing especially as Ambose and siblings appeared to start out as Deanes, children of John and Elizabeth Cooke.   A saving grace may be the name Ambrose - there do not appear to be many about - and could form a link between the various surnames.   I have not come across this before.
