Thomas Tank married in St. Helier
« on: Tuesday 02 December 08 22:06 GMT (UK) »

Re :  Thomas Tank born about 1856 Dublin

Alice Bailey born 1856 St. Helier, Jersey.

I am trying to trace the father of my great great grandfather Thomas Tank who was born in Ireland about 1856.  He married Alice Bailey from the Channel Islands before 1881 and was probably married in St.Helier, Jersey.

Is there any chance that some kind sould could find out who his father was and what he did.

My understanding is that his father was a bog oak manufacturer but the Irish census canot support this because it was burnt.

Hoping someone can help,,

Rob.

Hi Rob

I've looked through all the Parish indexes and unfortunately can't see a marriage for TT.

Don't know if this is still an active question.

There was a Richard Tank a Bog Oak Manufacturer listed as father to Richard Tank b 1865.

Is this your connection? Do you have more recent finding than I?

Thanks Paul

We have a Richard Tank born Jan-01-1866 (Dublin) died Apr-30-1934 (Montreal), married to Ellen Le Breton born Aug-04-1864 (St. Helier, Jersey), died Jun-24-1967 (Montreal).
I`m guessing that this was Richard Tank Senior, the Bog Oak Manufacturer.
We also have a Richard Tank born Jun-11-1892 (Jersey, presumably St. Helier), whose mother is listed as Helen Tank (should be listed as Ellen Tank nee Le Breton).
This Richard Tank served in WWI in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces (don`t know how to send an attachment).
This Richard Tank had 2 sisters, Rita Tank, born Feb-25-1894 (England, somewhere), died Feb-02-1983 (Montreal); and Maude Tank, born May-04-1896 (and baptized Jun-14-1896 in St. Helier), died Jul-12-1990 (Montreal).
I`m guessing that Thomas Tank may have been a brother to Richard Tank junior, and I may be able to find record of him here in Canada.

OK, here goes:

Our family records show a Richard Tank listed as being born January 01, 1866 in Dublin.
My wife confirms that he was the confectioner who was married to Ellen Le Breton.
Ellen (Le Breton) Tank was my wife's great-grandmother, who died in 1967 in Montreal at the age of 103 years.  My wife knew her well.
Maude Tank (b. May 04, 1896) was a daughter of Richard and Ellen Tank. She was my wife's grandmother.  My wife knew her well.
Richard and Ellen Tank had a son Richard Tank (b. June 11, 1892).  He was also a confectioner (in Montreal). Father-to-son thing, right?
The earliest Richard Tank (the Bog Oak Manufacturer?), would have been the eldest of the three Richard Tanks.  It appears that he was married to Mary Lawrence, whose name was also spelled Laurens.
Check the St. Helier Baptism records for various names and dates of Tank baptisms.
Those records have Mary Lawrence spelled Laurens, and Rita Tank (whom my wife also knew well) spelled as Ritea.
It appears that the Tank family originally came from Dublin to St. Helier, then some of them came to Montreal.
The various Tanks referenced above are buried in the Mount Royal Cemetary in Montreal.
Hope this helps.
