The East of London Family History Society website is useful for finding the location of parish registers for parishes in their area - look at parishes http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,345743.15.html

Most registers are at the London Metropolitan Archives http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/LGNL_Services/Leisure_and_culture/Records_and_archives/

You might also like to visit the Hackney Archives http://www.hackney.gov.uk/ca-archives.htm if your interests are mostly in that area.

Once you have got over the shock of how much everything costs (London is expensive even to people in the UK)  DO make sure your money is kept safely out of sight and reach of pickpockets, and keep credit cards etc even more safely.
Some friends of ours came over from Australia in the summer, and one of them had his wallet containing several hundred dollars lifted whilst he was on the bus. He didn't feel a thing.    >:(

I got an out of rush hours pass at Euston Station with which you can use both buses and trains. underground and it cost about £5.00 for the day,  that was for Central London.

I go to the Bag o' Nails pub at the back of Buckingham Palace for my lunch when I am in London.not far from Victoria Station.

Excellent meal, freshly cooked. comparable with the meal in a Manchester Pub,  The Shakespeare.  much cheaper than in Liverpool .

Not to be confused with the Bag o' Nails in Soho though.

Another excellent meal can be had in Westminster Hall opposite Westminster Abbey.

Gillie

another thought, the NAB bank has a debit account called "Gold Banking"  which you can use as a credit card, and also get money out of the ATM, there are no transactions fees including the shocking currency exchange charges

From memory cards available at the Commonweath and  ANZ could not be used as a credit and at the ATM.

Hi Again Anna,

Prior to going into Highgate..or on a tour...is there a place where you cand find out if the person you are looking for is actually buried in the cemetery??

Gillie

Hi Gillie  ;D

I'm new here and I've been doing quite a few searches of the Highgate Cemetery registers recently at Camden Library.  If you haven't already approached the Cemetery direct, would you like to let me have details of who it is you're looking for and I'll do a search when I'm next at the Library.  I plan on going there within the next couple of weeks.

The Cemetery is well worth a visit while you're in London, even if your relatives turn out not to be buried there.  It's fascinating place.

All best,

Marion

Hi

My great, great grandparents William and Kate Coombs are buried at Highgate Cemetery. I have visited their grave on a number of occasions.

I would recommend a visit to the Society of Genealogists. Take a look at what they've got.  :)
