Coming to London
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 04:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I am coming to London, from Australia, at the beginning of March 2009.  Can anyone tell me addresses for the following -

Where to search for Wills after 1858??
How to get to Highgate Cemetery from Victoria St Station...is it far to walk once you leave the train near Highgate??

Any usefgul places for me to visit to look at records, especially prior to 1837, particularly for a Hackney West birth and marriage??

Cheers

The London Tourist Board is at Victoria station, and the lovely people there will be happy to help you - tell you what sort of ticket to buy, give you an Underground map, tell you where to change, and so on. If you're staying for any length of time, buy a London A-Z (a map of London with all the street names in book form). The LTB will have that, too!  :)

Not a long walk to the cemetery.

Enjoy this great city!

Gillie

Oh yes, many pubs in London will do 'pub grub'.  They will probably advertise this fact outside.  There are plenty of places to eat with a variety of fayre.  Hope you have a successful and enjoyable time over here

Where to search for Wills after 1858??

Go to:

Principal Registry of the Family Division
First Avenue House
42-49 High Holborn
LONDON WC1 6NP

Nearest tube is Chancery Lane, but Holborn Tube isn't far either.  Alternatively there are numerous buses (depending on where you're coming from) including the 17, 45, 46, 341.

Get there in time to order wills before 3pm and you can have them the same day on the 1-hour service which is great - you can just pop out for a coffee at Starbucks and then come back in an hour to pick up all the material!  But if your order is placed even a minute past 3pm they often won't let you pick up same day.
