1855 Passenger list from UK to USA
« on: Sunday 06 February 05 16:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am searching for information regarding my ancestors entry to the USA.

SARAH CORBETT, born 1798, widow, her son EDWARD CORBETT, born 1834/5 and his wife CECILIA CORBETT (nee ASHWORTH) born 1834/5.

Edward Corbett married  Cecilia Ashworth, daughter of Zachariah Ashworth on 17th May 1855 in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire, England.

They had a son, ALONZO CORBETT, born in 1856 in MASS. USA.... So their immigration year must have been 1855/56 to the USA.

The 1860 census has them living at Attleboro, Bristol County, MASS.

Edward Corbett, 24, Overseer factory, b. England.
Priscilla (Cecilia) Corbett, 24, Weaver, born England.
Sarah Corbett 58, born England (untrue - b. Ireland)
Alonzo Corbett 4, born RI. USA.

All are buried in Oakgrove Cemetery, Pawtucket. RI.

Can anyone help with information regarding their entry into the USA?

I do believe that this Corbett family went to the USA to be with other Corbett family members who had travelled  to RI earlier and had settled.  I am also quite sure that Cecilia had a brother, Zachariah Ashworth who may have also gone to RI.

Can anyone help me with this search please?

Sincerely,
Linda.

Hi Linda

Passenger Lists for those years are indexed and on microfilm for most ports of arrival. NY is an exception but it is indexed online on 2 sites - CastleGarden.org and Ancestry.com.

If you want to search the NY arrivals, use the one step search engines at http://www.stevemorse.org/   be warned tho that CG.org doesn't have all the ships online yet AND it has ships that went to ports other than NY BUT it doesn't tell you that!

If you want/need to check other ports, you can get the indexes on film (either from a FHC or NARA) and check for the names you are looking for. you can get a list of film numbers
(NARA & FHC) at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/nara_indexbyport.shtml

Scroll down to the state you want and click on the link, then find the film # you need

you could find the family in 1870 census (see Col.   "Male Citizens of the United States of 21 years of age and upwards"   is it ticked ? If yes, they are citizens so they naturalized before 1870) and see if they were naturalized. If they were, you can hunt for their records as that will give you more precise details as to immigration dates and ports etc

http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ is the best spot, there are links to online records and guides to help you find where records are out in the 'real' world :)

Hi again

I just re read your note and realized your family settled in Bristol, MASS - so it is most likely they sailed direct to Mass and not into Ny or any other port!

I was reading the bit about RI and got confused :)

So, ships to Mass -- For a complete list of film numbers for ships going to Mass. after 1820, see http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/filmnos_mass.shtml

Find your date (year, month, day if known) and write down the NARA or Family History Centre film number you need. Then you can order the film in to your nearest FHC or have NARA do the lookup for you.

To search online ships lists to Massachusetts go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/usa_genealogy/  and select MASSACHUSETTS from the state choices. Scroll down to the yellow search box under IMMIGRATION on that page. From that
search engine you can search over 500 online ships for your ancestors.

Mass. was one of the states that the WPA indexed for all naturalization records before 1906 so if Edward naturalized you're in luck! The Northeast Region (Boston) of NARA has original copies of Naturalization records from federal courts for all 6 New England states. They also have copies of records from state, county and local courts in Mass  ando an index to documents filed in Mass. For the address of the Northeast Region, see http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/massachusetts.shtml

There is an online index to New England Naturalization Petitions 1791 - 1906 (Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire). As far as I know it is a partial index, but you
might find what you want there. A link is at
