surnames sim and clark
« on: Friday 05 December 08 15:48 GMT (UK) »
i have come to a brickwall
my great grandfather 's name was
James Murdock CLARK he was born according to him on dec 15th 1881 at inverurie  (this is the name he used on his children birth certificates )
his parents were Alexander CLARK  and Elizabeth SIM
James Murdock CLARK  emmigrated to canada in 1903  ended up in saskatoon and married in 1916  to an Elizabeth AVERY
could anyone help find his birth or baptism ,his parents  and how he travelled to canada as we have been told by various members of family he worked his way over on trawlers  would i be able to find that out

with elizabeth avery i have no problems as she stems from  the barling family tree in kent and that tree has been extensively by another family historian

Hi Elldina

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

There is a birth registration for a James Clark in Inverurie in 1881.

The full certificate can be searched for and downloaded from the Scotlands People site www.scotlandspeople.co.uk It's a pay to view site but very reasonable. After registering, you buy credits in blocks of 30 (£6). This certificate wouldcost 6 credits.

I'll see if I can find the family on any of the censuses.

Strange - the Inverurie one does not have those parents.

If you go to the IGI www.familysearch.org and enter the parents names and British Isles, Scotland and Aberdeenshire in the search boxes, you'll get a list of their children born 1856-1871 but all in Pitsligo.

1856 - William
1857 Elizabeth Ann
1859 Andrew
1861- Margaret Ritchie and
1864 - Francis Murdoch
1871 Charles James Detolls Barclay

The 1891 census does have this family in Pitsligo

Pithughie, Pitsligo, Aberdeen

Alexander Clark, 76, crofter, b. Strichen, Abn
Elsie or Eliza, 49, b. Rosehearty, Abn
Grace, 12
James, 9

both children born Pitsligo

I'll chase up Grace

Yes
Grace's parents were Alexander Clark and Eliza Sim so I would think that James would have been registered in Pitsligo as well.

Added - James Clark is registered 1882, Pitsligo, Aberdeen.

As it was a December birth it is quite common for the birth tp be registered in the following year

Which ones, Sancti?

Alexander and Elizabeth's first child on IGI is 1856 so they could have married before 1855 and not C of S.

You have a choice of James . b. Inverurie 27 March 1881 to John Clark and Martha m.s. Cassie

or James b. Pitligo, Dec 15 1881 to Alexander Clark and Eliza, m.s. Sim

I think the Pitsligo one looks more like yours  :)

Hi Gadget, I didn't check the opr's due to the 1882 birth date. I thought they may have been a bit old. Perhaps they were married young.
