Charles Frederic EDWARDS COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 24 December 08 06:12 GMT (UK) »
Charles was a doctor in the mid 1800s - he went to the Crimea, Bermuda and settled in Mauritius.  He married Johanna Maria Cleeve, in 1839,  had 3 children, Louisa, Charles Frederich, Cressey -  then married Mary S Wales, c1870, in Mauritius, and had another 3 children - John Douglas, William E and Herbert L. I am wondering if anyone can help with further information on these lines - I am trying to find if Charles has a connection to Emily Esther Edwards, who married George Edmund Franklin in Mauritius.  I have been unable to find her parents, to date - or those of George Franklin (who was born in US).
Thankyou,
Paula

Welcome to Rootschat!

The marriage to Joanna Cleeve was in Bedford registration district in the Sept quarter 1839 vol 6 page 33. If you order the marriage certificate from the GRO at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ you'll get their fathers' names.

The marriage is on the IGI on 8 Jul 1839 at Bedford St Paul. But whilst the IGI has a baptism of Charles Frederick Edwards at Flitton with Silsoe on 21 Jul 1816, parents John and Charlotte, which looks to be favourite, there are also Charles Edwards baptised in Potton and Biggleswade at the right time

An Emily Edwards, same parents as above, was baptised on 29 Nov 1812 at Flitton.

In 1851 Charles was aged 34 born Silsoe, so the baptism above looks to be the right one, but Joanna age 41 had a birthplace of St Kitts, West Indies. There was also Charles' sister Elizabeth 33 born Silsoe living with them

John Brereton married Emily Edwards on 24 May 1836 at Bedford St Paul

In 1841
Puddington Beds
John Brereton head marr 25 Clerk
Emily Brereton 25
Charles Brereton 20 mths
Hugh Brereton 4 mths
Charlotte Edwards 50
Edward Edwards 15
All born in Beds except Charlotte born in Scotland

There's a burial of Emily Brereton aged 31 at Puddington on 7 March 1844. It seems as though the Emily Esther Edwards in Mauritious may just be a coincidence, although I don't usually believe in coincidences.

In 1851
Langley Burrell, Wiltshire
Charlotte Edwards head widow 63 Landed proprietor b Edinburgh Scotland
Maria Edwards dau unmarr 40 b Silsoe Beds
Edward G Edwards son unm 28 Curate of Langley Burrell b Silsoe
+ 3 servants

Full entry for 1851 mentioned in previous message

Joanna M Edwards wife 41 b West Indies St Kitts
Charles Fk Edwards son 7 b Salop, Shrewsbury
Cressy Edwards son 6 b Shrewsbury
Elizabeth Edwards sister unmarr 33 b Silsoe

You give no date for Emily Esther's marriage in Mauritius. When was it? Do you have a copy of whatever is produced in Mauritius as a marriage certificate - does it name her father?

Many thanks, David, for all your help.
Emily Esther Edwards m. George Franklin 15 Feb 1865 (I believe Mauritius), but two requests to the M. Archives has given no result, and I've tried IGI with no result... Mind you, I had tried the Census records with little success for Chs Fk etc. George died on board ship St Pietro in 1886 and Emily came to South Australia with her 4 sons in Mar 1887, but died Apr 1887 (of malarial fever).

Sorry to but in on this one, working on the family for an uncle PENNO he married a FRANKLIN. The farthest back I can track her family is to Edmund Everett FRANKLIN bc.1870 (believed Port Louis, Mauritius), arrived South Australia c1885.  He married Florence HARRISON (b.19 Sep 1872 Willaston, S.A. to Frederick William HARRISON & Ann RENSHALL)
This Edmunds father is given on the marriage registration as George Winaud FRANKLIN.
Was wondering if Edmund Everett FRANKLIN was part of your family.
Thanks Ken

Hi Ken
That is definitely our family - my husband's mother was Elsie Violet Mavis Franklin who married Conrad William Bartsch - am happy to share what info I have - I have copies of birth and death certificates etc - am surprised that you haven't been given my name already, as the Penno family know I am researching the FRANKLIN line...
Email me direct if you can,
Regards
