Hi Eliana
If you can visit your local LDS you can order a copy of the film with the parish records on.  Not sure what records for Mountmellick they have from my notes I think - Catholic parish records and Society of Friends!

Hi,
I,m trying to find anything on Sarah Orange, born c. 1835. I know she was baptised (Roman Catholic) in Mountmellick, and her mother's name was Mary, but I'm afraid that's it.
Anything you can find would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks, Vaison.

Hi Vaison,
There is no mention of the Orange surname in my records, both from Laois County Council and my own.
If you go to Mountmellick Marriage records you will find a marriage in 1826 between John Keeran & Mary Orange.
The only Orange surname is Laois at the moment is in Portarlington and perhaps you could contact them to see if they have any family history.
Regards
Jack

Hello again SeanMac.

We haven't found out much more about the elusive Susannah Janvin but we have come up with some (albeit slender) details to keep us searching.

We saw a shipping record which showed that Susannah's reference was provided by one Valentin Labalt (maybe Labolt). Could he give us a lead to more about Susannah - if we find out who he was.

We've also been looking at some of her children's extended family and noticed that the name Franklin comes up a few times as a second name. Her own son no. 6 had this as his second name.  Her first son was named after his paternal grandfather and third son after his father. So we're also wondering if second son, Joseph, was named after  his maternal grandfather.

All this is long-winded way of presuming on your generosity and asking you two things:

1. Does the name Labalt come up in your records of Laois?

2. Is there a Joseph Franklin in those records?

I'd be really grateful for any light from your records.

Thank you.

Jojosam

Hi Jojosam,
Sorry,no luck there either.
Those surnames would be very rare around here and the only one I found is Labalt as a officer with William 111 in Ireland.
Labalt; A branch of this ancient Normady family has long been settled in Ireland. The 1st Labalt came over with William 111 as an officer in Williams army and settled in Kings county.
This came from Hugenots surnames.
There are no surnames in Griffiths Valuation of either name.
I'll keep a lookout.
Regards
Jack

Thank you Jack for your quick reply.

As a result of your info I've learnt a little more history as I needed to check out William III. And now that we know the referee Labalt was probably an Irishman, we can stop creating scenarios of recent arrivals from France helping each other out.

He's still unfinished business as I'd like to track down his details in case there is some clue to help us uncover more on Susannah (I'm assuming references were provided by certain categories of people, not just any next door neighbour). Depending on how we go, Valentin Labalt also gives us another task for when we get to Ireland one day although, with the several other Irish ancestors now on the list, we'd be in danger of seeing nothing else except records offices and cemeteries.  ;)

Thanks again

Jojosam
