1851 census look-up: George Berry in Cambridge
« on: Tuesday 08 February 05 09:39 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping to establish the birthplace of my gggg-parents; the 1841 census does not give too much away.

They were:

George Berry, head, aged 40
Maryann Berry, wife, aged 42

living in Cambridge, St. Andrew the Less.

The 1851 census reference is HO107/1760 folie 258A.

Thanks in advance,

Justin

Hi Justin
The full entry is

Passage, Wellington Row
George Berry head marr 40 shoemaker b Suffolk
Mary Ann Berry marr 42 b Norfolk
Alfred Berry son 18 scholar b Cambridge
Elijah Berry son 16 scholar b Cambridge
George Berry son 14 scholar b Cambridge
Aaron Berry son 10 scholar b Cambridge
Mary A Berry dau 7 scholar b Cambridge
Nathan Berry son 5 b Cambridge
Joseph Berry son 2 b Cambridge

Doesn't narrow down their birthplaces too much. I'll see if I can find them in 1861. Don't go away!
Regards

David

Hi Justin,
No luck I'm afraid. George is a bit of a mystery.

In 1861
31 Wellington St CambridgeSt Andrew the Less
George Berry h m 50 shoemaker b Suffolk
Matilda Berry wife 50 laundry b Cambridge
Arron Berry son unm 20 shoemaker b Cambridge
Nathan Berry son 14 shoemaker b Cambridge
Joseph Berry son 12 shoemaker b Cambridge

In 1871
Nathan Berry 25 bootmaker b Cambridge was at 41 Manor St, Chelsea (where presumably he made Chelsea boots!)
Interestingly also in Chelsea at 11 Wellington St was
George Berry h m 56 shoemaker b Cambridge and wife Elizabeth 40 b Chelsea.  Whether this is your gggg grandfather formerly in Cambridge remains to be seen, but it's a big coincidence with Nathan also also living in Chelsea.

In 1881 Nathan was still in Chelsea at 8 Little College St, bootmaker and George 67 bootmaker b Barnwell (also known as St Andrew the Less) and Elizabeth 45 laundress b Kingston on Thames Surrey.  There seems to have been a fair bit of latitude with ages!

But nothing I'm afraid that pins down his birthplace in Suffolk

Coming at it from a different angle in 1871 in St Andrew the Less was another shoemaker, Robert Berry aged 63 birthplace Suffolk, place Not known!. Wife Mary Ann 60 b Cambridge and dau Martha unm 23 b Cambridge.  Robert may have been a brother of George, given that cobbling seems to have been the family profession.  But in 1851 Robert was a milkman in Cambridge Holy Trinity but this time  with a birthplace given as Wickham Suffolk.  It's a long shot but so far it's the only lead I can find.

Let me know if you need any of the census entries expanded.  (George's other sons appear in later censuses, but I have not included details as they shed no light on George's birthplace)

Good luck

David

PS There is a marriage on the IGI at Barnwell on 18 July 1830 between George Berry and Mary Ann Cattermole which might be worth investigating.

David,

Wow!!

Knowing the counties is an excellent start. The marriage reference in the IGI is correct; I have Aaron's birth certificate giving his mother's name as Maryann Cattermole.

I'll have a good read through your mail and may well come back to you.

Thanks very much.
