Woburn - Parish Register Lookup - SALMON
« on: Wednesday 31 December 08 03:48 GMT (UK) »
Could you please do a lookup for the name SALMON in Woburn for me please?

Robert SALMON, who was in employment for the Duke of Bedford, died in 1821, but his wife and daughter would have died earlier - as he directed in his will that he wanted to be buried in the same grave as them at Woburn.

Also would like to make contact with anyone researching Robert SALMON.

There's an Ann Maria Salmon buried 29 June 1811 and Ann Salmon on 8 Aug 1812, both at Woburn St Mary. The birth and christening if Anne Maria are shown on the IGI

Robert appears in the excellent Woburn Rates Book site at http://www.vmine.net/woburn/surnames.asp

Thanks David -
Is there a marriage for Ann and Robert in Woburn? I think that he was at Woburn from at least 1800. Thank you I saw the rate book - great resource.

Virtually all of Beds marriages and baptisms pre 1812 are on the IGI. There's no marriage that I can see.

Nor is it on the Herts Allen Marriage Index at https://www.hertsdirect.org/ufs/ufsmain?formid=HALS_INDEXES

"As you enter the Park you will pass the splendid range of farm buildings, designed by Robert Salmon and Henry Holland, built in 1780." http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~engbdf/woburnabbey.html

It seems as though he was connected to Woburn much earlier than 1800, although some extracts on google books give a birth of 1763

There are two books about Robert Salmon of Woburn in the Local Heritage Library, which is inside Bedford Library.

1.    “R. Salmon’s controversy with the Woburn Market Committee, occasioned by their having unlawfully, and unjustly, turned out and excluded part of their own members, without any authority so to do.”
Woburn, S. Dodd, [1818?]
This is made up of the following pamphlets:
1.   Censure received from Mr. Day’s office and preface 3pp [13/03/1818]
2.   Refutation 1pp [14/03/1818]
3.   To the inhabitants of Woburn. The exposition no.1 by Robert Salmon 24pp [n.d.]
4.   Mr Salmon’s reasons for resigning of the Woburn Market Regulations [n.d]
5.   Woburn dialogues; drawn up to shew the characters of the parties 4pp [11/06/1818]
6.   Observations on a letter from William Shepard [By R. Salmon] 23pp [01/01/1819]
7.   Vote of annual Vestry Copy of resolution [of thanks to R. Salmon] 1pp 25/03/1819]
8.   Letter to the inhabitants of Woburn [by R. Salmon] 1pp 27/03/1819]
9.   Copy of a bulling letter lately received [by R. Salmon] 27pp July 1819]
10.   Handbill “Woburn Markets and Fairs” By R. Salmon 11/09/1819]
S Dodd, publ Title page and nos. 1, 9 & 10 and probably 2 & 7
S Manning (Newport), publ 3, 4, 5,  & 8.
Hay & Turner, London, publ 6.

2.   A biographical sketch of Mr Salmon who died at Woburn Park Bedfordshire October 1821. London, J. Brettell 1822. 23pp.

I have not seen either of these in any other collection, not even the British Library has them.
