Great haywood
« on: Wednesday 31 December 08 09:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Does anyone have connections in Great Haywood near Stafford.I have traced a family member who lived there in 1911. His name was Frank Hillman ..a grocer. wife Annie  and 9yr old daughter Gladys Lucy. It does not give an address just says Great Haywood and a seven roomed house (I got the details from preview of 1911 Cencus)
Most of my family Hillmans lived in Stafford town

Any help appreciated

Hi Dave,

This is a site that shows old photographs of Staffordshire.  If you put  Great Haywood in the search facility it will show you photographs of the area.  Gt. Haywood is only a few miles from Stafford.

also this site

Did the census give you an occupation for your ancestor?

Hi Cathy
Thankyou for the reply ..Frank is listed as  A grocer .and it say 'own account 'which I took as similar to our now self employed .I was hoping he had a shop in Gt Haywood that I could trace ..it says lived in Gt Haywood but gave no full address, but I would not think folk travelled to work as a grocer as we would today ???maybe I am wrong with that assumption?

Hi Dave, I know Great Haywood well, live nearby, my Grandchildren go to  School in Great Haywood, I am down there most days meeting them from School.  The Village has a few Pubs, Shops and a Doctor's it is quiet a busy Village on the Staffs Canal, we get loads of tourists, both from the Canal and the Staffordshire Way.  I will ask around regarding your Hillman family, I would think the 7 bed house would also be the Grocery Shop, it would have been in the centre of the Village so shouldn't be too hard to find, will get back to you next week, when I am back down there from linell.

Hi Linell
I was born in Stafford in 1949 and grew up there but we had little cause to visit the villages back then . I live in Northamptonshire now but still have some family in Stafford town, and although I know where Greatt Haywood is I know nothing about life there ...I would be grateful for anything you may find .Unfortunatly there are no older members of the family alive to ask about Frank ...
In 1911 Frank was 38 and Annie about the same Glady's Lucy was 9.at that time she was an only child ,not sure if they had any more children ? or what happened to Glady's.Looking forward to your reply next week ,will try digging a little more in the mean time..

Hi
As a follow up to my earlier posts ..

I have found more on Frank and Annie Hillman in Gt Haywood . and now find that Annie (or maybe all the family) had some connection with an E .Marsh. Tithe Barn Farm Gt Haywood..and this person registered the death of Annie in Dec 1956..
Would anyone know of this Farm and is it still there today?
