How to find maid service record?
« on: Wednesday 31 December 08 14:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I am just new on the road to my family history and I am wonding if anyone knows how to find Maid service history?

My Grandmother was born out of wedlock to my Great grandmother who was a maid in a doctor's house.

My G grandmother refused to ever say who the father of her child was (my grandmother) but my aunt (daughter of the child) has always said that the family believed it was the doctor that my ggrandmother worked for.

I am going to try and find out the name of this doctor so that at least i have some last name but the only infomation is my ggreatmothers name

Kate Eave (her father is Horace Eave) so she kept her maiden name until she married and became a Morris.

The only infomation i have is the Name Kate Eave and the fact she entered service at 14 years old.

I don't have my grandmothers birth cert..to see how old kate was when my grandmother was born.

IS there some kind of central maid service that kept records of maids and where they worked or is this just personally kept by each household?

All i have of Kate is a Photo that was taken with the 3 children she was a nanny to.

She was a nanny.

sorry if this isn't very clear as i was typing i was realizing things i havent thought of like 1. i do know what her job is and 2. her age in the photo is about 18.

Jaymee

Hi Jaymee

Welcome to Rootschat!

First of all, no there isn't a central Maid's register.  Each family who employed a maid did so individually, and the maids did change, leave and start other employment relatively regularly.

In order to get further with your query, you really need some dates - you MAY be able to find the family where your Great Grandmother was living in a Census, either 1901 or 1911?  The 1911 isn't fully available yet, but will be in the next couple of years.

When was your grandmother born?

Hello and thanks for the reply.

My Grandmother's name is Millicent Barbara Morris (Morris is her step father's name so no relation) and her birth date is: 21 Dec 1912.

....can i get infomation about the details of her birth cert for free?  And do i have to prove a relationship with her to get the birthcert?

Just trying to grapple through this.

thanks for any help

Hi Jaymee

no you don't have to prove you are related to get her birth certificate.

However, you will need the General Register Office number (GRO number) and to get that, you will need the name she was registered under - presumably your great grandmother's maiden name?  An area of the country would be useful too.

If you let us know what that is, someone will look up the birth reference GRO number for you.

I have looked up Millicent Barbaras registered in the first quarter of 1913, and the possible surnames are

Fitch (Sudbury, Suffolk)
Hall (Stoke on Trent)
Honour (Woodstock, Oxford)
Johnson (Newark)
Manley (West Bromwich)

are any of them her?

Should have said, the birth certificate will cost £7 to get, you can order it online if you have the GRO number.

Yes you can acquire a birth cert., without proving any relationship. Unfortunately it is not free it will cost £7.
Where was she born?
Was she Millicent Barbara Eave?
If you give us some more details, someone may be able to help you further.
There are local BMD sites which may be of some help.

Thankyou so much for the help!

This is the infomation i have:

My grandmother Born: Millicent barbara ? on 21 december 1912.  I will have to try and find out where her mother was in service and where she went to have Millicent.

Her mother was Kate Eave and could have had the first name Catherin (Katherin)  (So Cate?)

I don't have Kate Eave's birth or death date but she married and took the name Morris and gave that name to Millicent i think Millicent would have been around 5 years old at the time.

I don't know what name Millicent would have had as a last name at birth but definitely NOT her bio fathers.

Kate's father is Horace Eave.

Millicent (calling herself Barbara) Married Ernest George Pizzey with the maiden name Morris.

I can't see she would have had any of those last names Igorstrav, and it would make sense she just was given her mother's maiden name until her mother married.

I think the best thing would be to order the birth certs.

If anyone could help me with the GRO number for Millicent Barbara ?

and for her husband (my grandfather)

Ernest George Pizzey Born around Hounslow on 21 jan 1913 all i know is his father was possibly called George.

When you order the birth cert can you have it straight away or does it come via snail mail? LOL yeah i am excited to move forward!

I feel as it i have a hand full of loose ends :).

I think you will have to work your way backwards with some documentation before anything else.
Have you got your grandparents' marriage certificate?

Hi

The only way to perhaps find records of staff is to find out who they worked for but you are already trying to find that out.

Do you know where Millicent was born in 1912?
